Part 1 architectural assistant

Barr Gazetas is seeking a Part 1 architectural assistant to join its team in London.

Barr Gazetas are a friendly team of 43 architects, interior designers and master planners based in the West End. Our award-winning projects cover a broad range of sectors: workplace, fit-out, residential, public realm and mixed-use. To each and every project we bring a new approach, a fresh perspective, informed by our experience. We have many blue-chip clients and our USP is a personal, professional studio.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Part 1 architectural assistant who can contribute to our projects by producing images, models, presentation and technical drawings and preparing documents.

You will be proactive and able to demonstrate initiative while working as part of a team and independently. Good interpersonal and communication skills are essential.

The role can be very flexible as you will be required to assist in various stages of projects of various sizes. An ability to juggle priorities and deadlines is a must.

You will be assigned a mentor and we have an in-house training programme, while also encouraging all staff to take on extra training as they feel necessary.

Design and project responsibilities:

  • assist with project work as instructed and within time and budget constraints
  • assist in preparing design proposals as instructed by the project architect
  • assist in the production of detailed drawings, working drawings and 3D rendering
  • understand the design project and help to develop representations of design options for further discussion
  • assist with feasibility studies
  • draft drawings for planning applications
  • produce design statements
  • prepare presentation materials for internal and external purposes
  • draft and amend technical designs and production information under supervision
  • prepare written specifications and contract documentation under supervision
  • attend internal and external meetings, follow up action points and contribute to agenda items where appropriate
  • attend internal planning meetings
  • prepare, develop and edit models, images and any other documents relating to the design of a project under the supervision of the project architect
  • undertake snagging exercises for completed projects
  • visit site to assist the project architect with the monitoring of construction work under supervision
  • assist with site/building appraisals
  • survey and produce mark ups of existing instillations on site and encode it on electronic filing
  • report key project issues to the project architect
  • office and project files maintenance including preparing drawing issues and maintaining project QA records
  • researching project briefs, materials and construction products and systems
  • post completion assessment and debriefing for clients and building users
  • development of outline designs and detailed design

Experience and qualifications:

  • RIBA Part 1 qualification
  • ability to hand draw, sketch and make models
  • excellent written and graphic design skills
  • experience of task specific project management
  • good knowledge of current legislation, standards, building technologies, environmental design and construction methods
  • experience of assisting with the delivery of construction projects and assisting with the delivery of discreet work packages

Skills and attributes:

  • good conceptual design skills
  • good communication skills
  • ability to work well as a team
  • ability to work under own initiative

IT and software:

  • highly IT literate
  • excellent knowledge of AutoCAD software
  • excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office 365
  • knowledge of Rhino and/or SketchUp
  • good knowledge of graphic presentations (Adobe InDesign, Illustrator etc)
  • knowledge of BIM and Revit useful but not required

Salary is dependent upon experience.
