Urban Scale Interventions is looking for an experienced architect to join its growing Belfast office.

We are a fast growing, creative start-up delivering exciting high impact projects that solve issues in the places we live, work, and play. We’re a purposely broad team of researchers, architects, designers, strategists, filmmakers, producers, planners, technologists and makers. Our design philosophy is delivered through the Design Council’s established Double-Diamond Design approach and all our projects aim to incorporate co-design, wellbeing, culture & technology.

The studio have recently won a number of high profile projects in Northern Ireland and are looking for a suitable part III or equivalent full-time architect to work on these exciting cultural, commercial and educational projects.

The project and the role

The successful candidate will join the studio at an exciting time as it looks to grow and expand its architecture team.

The primary responsibilities of the role will be liaising with the design and consultant team to develop up to RIBA stage 3 the redevelopment of a stunning 17,000m2 former spinning mill in East Belfast; Transforming it into a new flexible events venue, education and training facility, co-working space and food hall. This work builds on the RIBA stage 1 work and Heritage Lottery grant already completed by the studio last year.

As well as being project architect the candidate will need to manage a complex group of stakeholders, partners and clients in addition to supporting junior staff members, and having involvement in other projects across the studio.

Further to this the candidate will be assisting with the project management of the architectural components of an installation for a major UK expo to be held in NI and England in May 2022.

This includes working closely with a renowned artist to develop a 10km sculpture trail being unveiled at numerous locations across the UK in spring 2022.

What you’ll be doing:

• lead numerous projects, manage design & consultant teams at all RIBA work stages
• liaise with internal team and external consultants on design, buildability, construction and master planning projects.
• balance cost effective building with innovative design to create value
• write specifications

We are after someone to:

• work collaboratively within the studio and wider design team
• assist in developing better studio practices
• has a willingness to engage with the studio culture, local community and network of tenants in and around the community our offices are based in

Criteria:

• exceptional design and technical skills
• RIBA Part 3 or equivalent qualification
• minimum four years’ post qualification experience
• excellent project management and problem-solving skills
• have up to date knowledge of government and NI planning policies
• good working knowledge of UK building regulations
• good understanding of construction methods
• sense of commerciality and willingness to be involved in all aspects of the business
• fluency in spoken and written English
• ability to prepare drawing packages for planning through to tender and construction stages
• have excellent presentation and communication skills
• experience working with listed buildings

Bonus Criteria:

• knowledge of 3D CAD software, Rhino or SketchUp a bonus

Where will the role be?

USI is a growing design studio based within a thriving creative community at Portview Belfast, along with an events space the studio operates, there is an onsite brewery and coffee roaster. We offer a flexible working environment but try to work in the studio as frequently as possible to allow creativity and collaboration to flow. The ideal candidate will be someone who can hit the ground running and is keen to play an integral part as we scale up the architectural design side of the studio

Salary: commensurate with experience – within the salary band £35,000 – £38,000 per annum
