The Architects’ Journal (AJ) is the leading professional publication for the UK’s architectural community. Our award-winning, campaigning title is leading industry change through both its exceptional print and digital offerings.
Design is crucial to the success of the AJ as we are covering a creative discipline and we have a particularly design-sensitive audience.

The role
The Architects’ Journal (AJ) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced graphic designer/art editor.
As art editor of the AJ you will become the guardian for all the creative output of the award-winning AJ brand. This predominantly involves designing the monthly issue of AJ, but also means you’ll be creating graphics and visuals for online features and building studies and be working with the events and marketing teams.
We’re looking for someone with an enthusiasm for design and architecture and lots of ideas to share.
You are likely to have a minimum of three years’ relevant industry experience, preferably within the publishing industry, and you need to be highly capable in InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. Experience of sending pages to press, working across digital and web design platforms (WordPress), and commissioning illustrators/ photographers, will be advantageous. An ability to navigate tight deadlines is important!

Key duties and responsibilities:
- design, art-working, and sending to press the monthly issue of the AJ
- commissioning and managing budgets for photographers and illustrators
- reformatting and editing photos and architectural drawings
- creating digital assets such as advertising banners and holding images for the AJ website
- general day-to-day design and art-working assistance/guidance for the AJ team
- commissioning, managing and briefing freelance designers as and when needed
- creating graphics for AJ’s events including the AJ100 Awards and AJ Small Projects exhibition
- joining and contributing to team and planning meetings
Skills and requirements:
- three plus years’ experience working within the print publishing industry
- experience with design standards for online and print
- experience working with and briefing other designers
- fluent with Adobe Creative Suite: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator
- experience with using a CMS
- highly organised, able to cope with multiple deadlines
- cheerful can-do disposition with willingness to collaborate
- comfortable receiving and giving feedback
- full of creativity and ideas, with the skills to realise them
