In accordance with § 98 Austrian University Act 2002 (Universitätsgesetz 2002) for Architectural Design at the Institute for Art and Architecture (IKA). This full-time professorship is offered for a period of five years, starting on 1 October 2023.
The architectural education at the IKA is based on an interacting structure of five platforms, each dedicated to a specific focus. These five platforms are: Analogue Digital Production (ADP), Structural Materials Technology (CMT), Ecology Sustainability Cultural Heritage (ESC), History Theory Criticism (HTC), Geography Landscapes Cities (GLC).
The open position is located within the platform Analogue Digital Production (ADP).
We are looking for a person who has set international standards through their experimental work in the field of architecture and who has helped shape the discourse on analog and digital architectural production and its methods. Applicants are expected to represent the topic of Analogue Digital Production in its diversity and, applied to theory and practice, to critically reflect on technological developments in the field and their far-reaching social implications.
Applicants should understand the platform as a design-oriented setting of architectural education, where the complexity of contemporary architecture and its changing fields of activity are taught and artistic, experimental and technical competence can be acquired. Applicants are invited to formulate their views on the role of analog and digital tools and methods in architectural production and their impact on existing and future concepts of space as part of their application (for example the impact of virtual spaces or artificial intelligence).
Central to the application are the articulation of focal points, orientation and future perspectives for the platform for Analogue Digital Production at the Institute of Art and Architecture, as well as the presentation of a teaching and research concept which may include a description of necessary equipment.
Applicants must have sufficient university teaching and practical experience to teach and research the complex topics related to analog and digital production in relation to theory, architectural design, and possible implementations. Networking with similarly oriented research groups within and outside academia is expected in order to relate all relevant fields of knowledge, from technical to artistic practice.
This professorship includes teaching obligations such as design studios and courses, as well as research and administration.
Conditions of employment:
- qualification as an architect with a completed Austrian or equivalent international university degree or proof of an equivalent academic qualification corresponding to the application
- proof of an internationally recognised highly qualified and experimental practice in design and/or construction outside the academic field or proof of corresponding scientific or artistic work in the field
- university teaching experience in the field of analog and digital production, including teaching of architectural design
- willingness to take on organizational tasks, both in academic self administration (e.g. in committees) and in matters of the study program
- high degree of teamwork and cooperation skills
- excellent knowledge of English and/or German
- gender and discrimination critical competence or willingness to actively acquire and broaden these skills
The teaching commitment includes at least 14 hours per week.
The monthly gross salary according to the collective bargaining agreement for university employees in salary group A1 for full-time employment is currently Euro 5.437,7.
In addition to teaching and research concepts as well as the articulation of focal points and orientation of the platform for Analogue Digital Production at the Institute of Art and Architecture, the application must include

An der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien gelangt folgende Stelle zur Ausschreibung: Universitätsprofessur.
Gem § 98 Universitätsgesetz 2002 für Architekturentwurf am Institut für Kunst und Architektur (IKA) im vollen Beschäftigungsausmaß ab 01.10.2023 für fünf Jahre.
Die Architekturausbildung am IKA beruht auf einer interagierenden Struktur aus fünf Plattformen, die je einen spezifischen Schwerpunkt bilden. Diese fünf Plattformen sind: Analoge Digitale Produktion (ADP), Tragkonstruktion Material Technologie (CMT), Ökologie Nachhaltigkeit Kulturelles Erbe (ESC), Geschichte Theorie Kritik (HTC), Geographie Landschaften Städte (GLC).
Diese Professur ist in der Plattform Analoge Digitale Produktion (ADP) angesiedelt.
Gesucht wird eine Persönlichkeit, die durch ihre experimentelle Arbeit im Bereich Architektur auch international Maßstäbe gesetzt hat und den Diskurs zu analoger sowie digitaler Architekturproduktion und deren Methoden mitprägt. Von den Bewerber_innen wird erwartet, das Thema Analoge Digitale Produktion in seiner Vielfältigkeit zu vertreten sowie technologische Entwicklungen auf dem Gebiet und ihre weitreichenden gesellschaftlichen Implikationen angewandt auf Theorie und Praxis kritisch zu reflektieren.
Bewerber_innen sollen die Plattform als entwurfsorientierten Ort der Architekturausbildung verstehen, an dem die Komplexität zeitgenössischer Architektur und ihrer sich verändernden Aufgabenfelder vermittelt, sowie künstlerische und experimentelle Kompetenz erworben werden. Bewerber_innen sind aufgefordert ihre Auffassung der Rolle analoger und digitaler Werkzeuge und Methoden in der Architekturproduktion und deren Auswirkung auf bestehende und zukünftige Raumverständnisse in der Bewerbung zu formulieren (z.B. Einfluss virtueller Räume oder künstlicher Intelligenz).
Als zentraler Teil der Bewerbung sind Schwerpunkte und Ausrichtung der Plattform für Analoge Digitale Produktion am Institut für Kunst und Architektur sowie ein Lehr- und Forschungskonzept zu formulieren, welches gegebenenfalls auch die Beschreibung einer dafür notwendigen Ausstattung beinhaltet.
Bewerber_innen müssen über ausreichende universitäre Lehrerfahrung und Praxis verfügen, um den Themenkomplex analoge und digitale Produktion in Lehre und Forschung in Bezug zu Theorie, Architekturentwurf und möglicher Umsetzungen zu unterrichten. Eine Vernetzung mit ähnlich orientierten Forschungsgruppen innerhalb und außerhalb des akademischen Betriebes wird erwartet, um alle relevanten Wissensgebiete – von technischer bis zu künstlerischer Praxis – in Beziehung zu setzen.
Zu den Aufgaben der Professur gehören Entwurfslehre und Abhaltung von Lehrveranstaltungen (Vorlesungen, Seminare, etc.), Forschung sowie Administration.
Anstellungsvoraussetzungen:
- Qualifikation als Architekt_in mit einem entsprechenden abgeschlossenen österreichischen oder gleichwertigen internationalen Hochschulabschluss oder Nachweis einer der Verwendung entsprechenden gleichwertigen akademischen Qualifikation
- Nachweis einer international anerkannten hochqualifizierten und experimentellen außeruniversitären Entwurfs- und/oder Baupraxis oder Nachweis einer entsprechenden facheinschlägigen wissenschaftlichen oder künstlerischen Praxis
- universitäre Lehrerfahrung im Bereich analoge und digitale Produktion sowie in Architekturentwurf
- Bereitschaft zur Übernahme organisatorischer Aufgaben, sowohl in der akademischen
- Selbstverwaltung (z.B. Mitarbeit in den Universitätsgremien) als auch in Belangen des Studienbetriebs
- ein hohes Maß an Team- und Kooperationsfähigkeit
- ausgezeichnete Englisch- und/oder Deutschkenntnisse
- Gender- und diskriminierungskritische Kompetenz bzw. die Bereitschaft sich diese Kompetenzen aktiv anzueignen und selbstständig zu erweitern
Zur Lehrverpflichtung gehören Lehrveranstaltungen im Ausmaß von mindestens 14 Unterrichtsstunden pro Woche.
Der monatliche Bruttobezug nach dem Kollektivvertrag für die Arbeitnehmer_innen der Universitäten in der Gehaltsgruppe A1 beträgt derzeit Euro 5.437,7.
