Product designer
at Toogood
Toogood is seeking a product designer to join its furniture and homewares team in London.
We are looking for an ambitious and pragmatic individual to design and develop limited edition gallery pieces, furniture and homewares. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of four years experience in product design, preferably in the high-end furniture market. They should have an avid interest in design and a keen understanding of the studio’s unique aesthetic. They will be working closely with Faye, our creative director and production manager.
The candidate needs to be able to work at a high productivity level to present and translate concepts through to feasible designs and final production. This role is for a passionate, self-motivated, experienced candidate with a confident can-do attitude. They should be a team player able to support the rest of the team and contribute to a positive working environment.
Responsibilities:
- design and development of future furniture pieces for Toogood, including upholstery and dining from sketching through to the final piece
- design and development of future Limited Edition art pieces for Faye Toogood and Friedman Benda Gallery
- design and management of Collaboration projects with clients such as Hem and CC Tapis
- designing and development of homewares for Toogood with the assistance of external development consultants and suppliers
- designing and developing any bespoke pieces for private clients or interior projects
- managing prototyping budgets and working closely with the production manager to create feasible timelines for the design and development of all the above areas
- travelling to suppliers across UK and Europe to oversee prototyping and product development
- keeping up to date with the competitive landscape, research and presenting your findings to the wider team
- meticulous archiving of all projects – both digitally and physically
- managing your own time and that of assistants – i.e. freelancers, interns and design assistant
Skills and experience:
- ability to design across commercial furniture and homewares to high-end art pieces – from concept through to production
- advanced Solidworks skills including surface modelling and the ability to create technical drawings for manufacture
- advanced rendering skills, Keyshot is preferred
- advanced Adobe suite skills, especially Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.
- advanced model-making skills, using mixed media. Experience in modelling with clay would be a bonus
- ability to adapt and develop designs with manufacturers, able to understand their capabilities to create fully realised products ready for production
- excellent understanding of a variety of materials and their appropriate application + finishes, including: fibreglass, Jesmonite, timber, metal, upholstery etc
- confident hand drawing skills are highly desirable, ability to quickly sketch ideas to communicate internally and sketches worthy of presenting externally
- ability to multitask and balance a variety of projects simultaneously whilst being adaptable to changing priorities
- strong organisational skills with the ability to work to strict and short timelines, as well as a keen eye for detail
- confidently represent the company externally and maintain its reputation among clients, manufacturers and gallery owners
- photography skills are a bonus
