The Natural History Museum is looking for an architect/public space design manager to join its team in London.
About the role
In support of the Natural History Museum’s strategy to 2031 we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to transform the Museum though a suite of new galleries and improvements to our public spaces at South Kensington and Tring. Our ‘Public Space Plan’ describes our aspiration to develop our buildings and displays, bringing to the fore the collections and scientific research carried out by the museum’s scientists and opportunities to improve the visitor’s experience across all of our sites.
We are seeking a highly talented, experienced architect to lead on the strategic design, spatial planning, visioning and design delivery stages of this plan and to develop a series of proposals which explore the spatial opportunities for our galleries and public spaces. The successful candidate will provide architectural and permanent galleries design expertise and leadership, and champion sustainable design.
Initially funded until March 2025, this post is critical for the ongoing development of the Public Space Plan. Therefore, the successful candidate should be able to take a long-term view on these projects, understanding their context within a Public Space Plan for the whole Museum.
While the focus will be on delivering to the Public Space Plan, the full-time role will also be involved in the enhancement of our public spaces and galleries generally, estates and fabric maintenance and other spatial and gallery design projects for the Natural History Museum.
About you
Candidates for this role will be qualified architects with a minimum of three years of post Part 3 experience, with a great portfolio demonstrating experience designing and delivering projects in historic or listed buildings. Museum, gallery and exhibition design experience is an advantage. The role requires a skilled architect with a broad range of experience delivering all RIBA stages of projects from feasibility to handover, preferably in a leading role and with experience of managing people and projects.
Interested in the work of the NHM, a passion for museums, galleries/heritage sector and the natural world, and to delivering sustainable design solutions is an advantage.
