David Chipperfield Architects is recruiting a senior digital designer/BIM manager for its London studio.

Job purpose 

The role of senior digital designer is pivotal in providing hands-on support for David Chipperfield Architects digital design processes, projects and teams. Working with project teams to assess digital resources, deliverables, skillsets and workflows appropriate for design, production and collaboration. They would be responsible for creating digital design workflows, resources and guidance documentation to allow project teams to work efficiently and consistently to the highest quality. In addition, the role would be developing digital design plans for projects and setting up models to facilitate effective design and production work.

The role is to be fully embedded within specific projects where there is a need for specialist digital design knowledge including model federation, review and manipulation. They would provide in-house training, support and problem-solving on digital design to teams working on a wide variety of projects at all design stages. They would assess projects and digital models for consistency and compliance with project and practice standards methods and procedures. The role would also work with external design teams and consultants to ensure effective collaboration and communication.

Key responsibilities 

Project digital design leadership:

  • digital design support: provide project teams with training and support in Archicad, Rhino and Grasshopper
  • digital design deliverables: attend meetings, advise and work closely with project teams and their consultants on developing project deliverables and workflows to achieve the project client’s goals, and maintain DCA’s level of design control within projects
  • project digital design strategy: collaborate with project teams in developing appropriate digital design strategies for each project, including software usage, workflows and training, CAD and BIM set up, as well as digital quality assurance and quality control; ensure every project team has the appropriate skillsets and the digital tools to achieve the desired design and technical deliverables at all stages
  • training and specialist consultancy: deliver digital design training for project teams, for design, production and collaboration; engage with relevant external specialists to support training and problem solving as required
  • digital design resources: develop practice and project standards, templates, assets and guidance for effective 3D modelling, visualisation, documentation and communication
  • digital design review and audit: review and audit projects, models and documentation for compliance with practice and project standards and to ensure effective use of digital design tools
  • digital design R&D: participate in research and development programme to explore digital design tools for sustainable design, effective delivery and seamless collaboration

Industry digital design connection:

  • engage with the wider industry’s digital design bodies, maintain current knowledge of emerging technologies and apply current knowledge of emerging technologies to problem-solving on projects
  • promote excellence in continuing professional development and ensure project teams are familiar with emerging ISO protocols and best practice to ensure the best use of computational design resources
  • participate in industry activities, conferences, trade fairs and talks, and keep abreast of current technological developments

Skills and experience :

  • Archicad expert
  • commitment to sustainability in line with the practice values
  • prior experience as a BIM manager or BIM coordinator in a design lead practice
  • good experience in developing and delivering architectural projects of various scales
  • experience in using digital design tools on new and refurbishment projects
  • excellent level of technical competency and industry knowledge
  • advanced level of experience in digital design software platforms and plug-ins, in particular 3D modelling in Archicad, Rhino and Grasshopper in all project stages
  • clarity in communicating processes to architects and project teams
