Hackney Council is seeking to recruit a senior development manager to join the award-winning economy, regeneration and new homes division. In this strategic role, you will use your expertise in site appraisals, regeneration and development to unlock the full potential of Hackney’s land and buildings. As senior development manager in the regeneration and economic development service, you will identify development and regeneration opportunities on various council-owned sites across the borough, contributing to the delivery of the council’s strategic priorities such as delivering new social housing, workspace, temporary accommodation and place-shaping initiatives.
You will utilise your extensive experience in development or regeneration sectors to review council-owned land and buildings, and produce comprehensive options appraisals to assess and recommend development opportunities, establishing strong working relationships with delivery teams, heads of service, the council’s senior leadership team and elected members.
You will be required to collaborate effectively with local communities and stakeholders to gain support for and/or co-produce various initiatives, and apply relevant corporate and planning policy into operational practice to deliver tangible benefits to local residents.
You will be able to develop compelling business cases that align with organisational objectives, ensuring adherence to public sector procurement and effectively managing contracts for technical services. You are able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of development and construction processes, whilst maintaining up-to-date knowledge of industry trends and best practices.
Ideally, you will possess an MRICS or ARB accreditation.
The team’s accomplishments
Hackney Council is one of the UK’s highest performing local authorities, serving one of London’s best places to live and work. It is delivering an ambitious programme to build thousands of genuinely affordable homes and shape the future of the borough’s town centres and neighbourhoods in partnership with local residents and businesses.
Between 2018 and 2022, the economy, regeneration and new homes division started, completed or received planning permission for 1,984 new homes and made our public spaces some of the best and award-winning. The development team is a part of the regeneration and economic development service, and in December 2022, it received cabinet approval to advance a new homes programme to deliver 400 new homes.
Seventy-five per cent of these new homes will be designated for social rent, prioritised for local families in need. The development team is currently working jointly with the new homes delivery team to produce a programme and project briefs and procure design teams. Alongside this, the team is also identifying opportunities for a further programme of affordable housing, temporary accommodation, affordable workspace and other opportunities.
