Remote working, UK
Illustration tutor
at The Open College of the Arts

The Open College of the Arts (OCA) is seeking experienced UK-based illustration tutors to join its team remotely.

Contract: permanent, flexible contract
Salary: Grade 5, Spine Point 29 – £37,832 (FTE) paid as an hourly rate, plus 14.54 per cent in lieu of holidays

The tutor role is primarily responsible for providing academic support and assessment for students on our Illustration undergraduate degree.

OCA’s strategic vision is ‘to be at the forefront of student-led creative arts education through open, enhanced and supported distance learning, for an evolving society’. OCA is a non-profit educational charity, whose purpose is to widen participation in arts education through open flexible distance and online learning. We work with students with a broad range of experiences and motivations, so it is essential you have experience of teaching, mentoring and/or supporting students either at higher education or in other contexts, and some understanding of distance learning methods.

The illustration degree aims to support students in gaining the technical skills in illustration and to nurture students’ creative and visual vocabulary through an exploration of material and conceptual approaches.

Students are introduced to specialisms, such as editorial and commercial illustration, book and magazine illustration, comics and graphic novels, branding, packaging and cross-platform communication, and are provided with opportunities to develop their own illustration practice through self-directed research and experimentation.

The degree aims to develop autonomous learners with the intellectual, practical and conceptual skills to push the boundaries of contemporary illustration practice, and to apply their learning to future employment, further research, collaborative practices and/or life-long learning.

Working within our new curriculum, launched in April 2023, you will deliver one-to-one tutorials, formative feedback and group activities, such as seminars and critiques.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate their illustration knowledge within practical, critical, creative and/or professional contexts. In particular, we are interested in recruiting practitioners with a sound understanding or technical expertise in delivering artwork that spans both digital and analogue platforms. A degree, postgraduate or equivalent in a discipline relevant to the role and/or substantial professional experience is required.

The post holder will need to work collegiately with the illustration team to drive forward innovations in line with OCA’s academic strategy and learning, teaching and assessment strategy. Excellent communications skills are important, as is the ability to work collegiately as a member of a team. The post reports to the programme leader for illustration.

Tutors will be supported through a probation period, regular tutor team meetings and other development opportunities.

The role will be undertaken online with occasional visits to our offices, which means tutors can be located in any part of the UK.

As with all our academic staff, tutors should be experienced practitioners in their creative disciplines, share OCA values of open and accessible arts education, and be able to meaningfully communicate the subject to students.

In line with OCA’s fair recruitment policy, we seek to minimise the effect of unconscious bias. At the shortlisting stage, OCA will remove all identifying information including names, dates and anything else deemed necessary to create an open and fair selection process, and to make informed decisions based on the skills of the applicant and relevant data alone.

Applicants must have the right to work in the UK full time. OCA does not offer visa sponsorship.

Unfortunately, we cannot always respond to unsuccessful applicants at the shortlisting stage.
