at Global Designing Cities Initiative
The Global Designing Cities Initiative (GDCI) is seeking to recruit a programme associate to join its mission to transform streets around the world.
This role will support the Bloomberg Initiative for Cycling Infrastructure (BICI) by creating technical written and visual content/designs, publication or booklet development, training or workshops, and other programme-related activities that support GDCI’s work in select international cities.

What you’ll do
The programme associate – handbook will be a part of the BICI team, reporting directly to the programme manager – design. You will coordinate with the broader BICI team, which includes programme managers, the design lead and the programme lead.
In this role, you will support various projects in various regions by supporting the review, creation and implementation of street designs, with a specific focus on cycling infrastructure. You will support the development of technical written and visual content, contributing to the development of a supplement to the Global Street Design Guide and helping organise capacity-building sessions and workshops.
More specifically, you will do things like
Support the development of technical supplements:
- under the supervision of the programme manager – design, the design lead and the BICI team, assist with developing a supplement to the Global Street Design Guide focusing on cycling infrastructure
- research case studies, international best practices, content or visual/technical approaches, helping to incorporate real-world examples into draft content
- summarise and convey written, verbal and visual complex information for various needs, such as multiple projects, publications or presentations
Support the technical assistance work in the programme’s selected cities:
- develop conceptual and technical drawings and sketches, review designs and documents for various street design and cycling infrastructure projects, and presentations in the BICI cities across the world
- support workshops and training sessions using GDCI core materials, such as the Global Street Design Guide and the Designing Streets for Kids
Project administration and programmatic support:
- help prepare reports and presentations to internal or external audiences to provide updates on the progress of the program and cohort of cities
- assist in summarising and conveying complex information in an intelligible way in written, verbal and visual form for various audiences
Who you are
GDCI is looking for a highly collaborative individual who is well-organised and passionate about designing streets, particularly cycling infrastructure, and has a background in street and/or transportation design, engineering or planning, with strong street design skills. You are comfortable working with diverse teams (and projects) from various contexts (and countries) located in various parts of the world.
You must be willing to accommodate the schedule of a globally based team; as such, there may be some instances of required phone calls/meetings outside of regular work hours. This role may travel once or twice a year, either nationally or internationally. Not to exceed more than one week at a time.
To be successful in this job, you will excel in the following areas:
- a passion for street design and mobility: you are passionate about mobility and street design, particularly cycling infrastructure and the processes involved in shaping safe, sustainable and healthy cities
- street design and graphic skills: you can create conceptual diagrams and technical drawings for publications and external-facing materials to communicate street design concepts to various audiences using tools like 2D and 3D software
- strong communication skills: you have experience communicating technical concepts verbally, visually and in writing to a wide range of audiences; competency in languages besides English is a plus, especially in the languages spoken in the selected BICI cities

Location: remote (work from home), preferably located in Africa/Europe/the Middle East
