Job summary
The School of Architecture (SoA or School) in the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs (CAPPA) at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) welcomes applications for a full-time, nine-month faculty position with tenure beginning August 2024.
Essential duties and responsibilities
The School of Architecture welcomes applications for a faculty position to be appointed with tenure at the rank of associate or full professor. Applicants not currently holding tenure should exhibit qualifications commensurate with such an appointment. Under a university-wide hiring plan entitled RISE 100 (details below), the school is seeking a catalytic, collaborative leader who can innovatively contribute to the college’s evolving design research and externally funded agenda. The goal of this position is to enhance academic and research activities that advance the mission of the school and maintain its national reputation as a distinguished leader in design education. The ideal candidate should have an entrepreneurial mindset, established research and/or professional portfolio with appropriate external funding and an ability to build cross-disciplinary teams in the College, UTA and external organisations.
Successful candidates will exhibit potential to substantively contribute to the discipline of architecture, develop innovative pedagogy and apply the principles of making in their work and teaching. The candidate must demonstrate exceptional ability to teach design courses in the architecture or interior design programmes.
Areas of emphasis
The school is seeking to foster innovation in applied research for the built environment. We invite applicants with expertise in one or more of, but not limited to, these areas:
- advanced computational design, technologies and research focused on digital fabrication and/or manufacturing
- material science research relative to future-focused, sustainable built environments
- building performance and analysis focused on integrated architectural solutions
- emerging technologies related to AI/VR/AR and immersive environments with demonstrated design outcomes
Applicants should have an established agenda of scholarship and an articulated, distinct line of inquiry as it contributes to the making of architecture. Research and/or creative practice are essential in reinforcing the connection between the school’s mission, the professional community and the disciplines of design. Evidence of collaborative work is especially encouraged.
Required qualifications:
- an accredited, terminal degree in architecture, interior design or related field
- a PhD or advanced research degree in a relevant area of expertise
- demonstrated excellence in teaching design courses
- evidence of success in research and/or creative activity
- evidence of the ability to obtain external funding
Preferred qualifications:
- evidence of exceptional design work and visual communication skills
- demonstrated interdisciplinary collaboration
- professional licensure or demonstrated professional experience
School and College information
The School of Architecture at UTA, with over 50 years as a leading institution in architectural education, is home to over 1,100 students. The SoA offers a Bachelor of Science in Architecture, Bachelor of Science in Interior Design (CIDA and NASAD accredited), Master of Architecture (NAAB accredited), Master of Science in Sustainable Building Technology and undergraduate minors in architectural history and environmental and sustainability studies. Also, the school partners with the Civil Engineering Department to offer a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering. In a metropolitan region rich with possibilities for research, creative practice and cultural exploration, the school maintains strong ties to the large professional design community of Dallas and Fort Worth, the fourth largest metro area in the country. The SoA has an established record as a design school with noted strengths in the areas of making, fabrication, design communication, community-engaged design and design-build.
The SoA is home to several active and large student organisations including the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), Latinos in Architecture (LiA), NOMAS (National Organisation of Minority Architect Students), Tau Sigma Delta (TSD), Interior Design Student Group (IDSG), and US Green Building Council Students (USGBC).
Along with the School of Architecture, CAPPA includes the Landscape Architecture Program and Department of Public Affairs and Planning. CAPPA institutes have forged numerous partnerships throughout the DFW Metropolitan area and include Arlington Urban Design Center (AUDC), Center for Metropolitan Density (CFMD), Center for Transportation, Equity, Decisions and Dollars (CTEDD), Digital Architecture Research Consortium (DARC), David Dillon Center for Texas Architecture (DDC) and Institute of Urban Studies (IUS).
