For over 50 years, our artisans have incorporated glass beads, gold leaf, painting, seashells, wood veneers, and stitching into collections made in our Skokie, Illinois studio, just north of Chicago.

The company is seeking an associate studio creative director to learn and develop unique, handcrafted surfacing materials for inline collections and custom opportunities under the supervision and guidance of MAYA’s Studio creative director. Also working closely with the company’s executive vice president of product development and manufacturing, the director of product development and the product development manager, the associate studio creative director interfaces primarily with members of the production and product development team. The first few months of employment will be spent working with our production team learning our processes, techniques, tools and materials.

This full-time position is based in our Skokie headquarters. This role will report to the executive vice president of product development and manufacturing and have frequent interactions with the studio creative director, director of product development and the product development manager. Occasional travel and overtime may be required.

Responsibilities:

  • developing in-house products/production processes for in line collections and Atelier custom projects
  • creating product standards and monitoring quality control/consistency
  • training production team to replicate your concepts and recipes in a large-scale capacity
  • exploring techniques and inventing new handcrafted wallcovering finishes
  • researching new manufacturing techniques and sourcing the tools to implement them in both small-scale and large-scale applications
  • documentation of product recipes and processes for in-line, custom, and discontinued products
  • gain familiarity with all tools and techniques in the studio
  • stay up to date and informed with processes tools, techniques and within the industry
  • master production techniques of current and past collections
  • collaborate with product development team to execute designs/pattern development for new wallcoverings and custom “atelier” opportunities
  • meet deadlines and budgets for all custom “atelier” opportunities
  • participate in product-making demonstrations for studio tours and special events

Requirements:

  • BA or a BFA degree and five-plus years’ work experience in related field
  • a portfolio of work showcasing a strong multidisciplinary approach to designs
  • and visual solutions that utilize a vast range of materials and techniques
  • a strong design eye with a passion for handcraft
  • ability to communicate with others effectively, both orally and in writing,
    in a professional manner
  • capacity to work independently as well as part of a fast-paced team
  • complete tasks fully and on time
  • proactive, creative, detail-oriented team player
  • strong interpersonal resourcefulness and ability to cultivate cross-functional partnerships
  • strong record-keeping and organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail
