The Ohio State University is seeking a tenure-track assistant professor to join its faculty in Columbus, Ohio.

The architecture section of the Knowlton School at The Ohio State University (OSU) welcomes applications for two tenure-track faculty positions, starting as early as Autumn 2027. We seek candidates whose expertise will complement and expand the Knowlton School’s dynamic faculty, contributing to a rich culture of design, history and theory, technology, and contemporary architectural practice. Selected candidates will teach across the undergraduate and graduate architecture curricula, with teaching roles tailored to their areas of expertise and research. Candidates should be capable of leading design studios at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as teaching lecture courses, seminars, and/or other forms of instruction depending on their specialization.

We are interested in energetic, intellectually curious, and creative colleagues with an ambitious research agenda. As architecture confronts profound changes in climate, technology, urbanization, and modes of production, we welcome candidates whose work engages critically and imaginatively with the contemporary moment. Rather than prescribing a particular subject area or mode of practice, we are especially interested in research and teaching that open new questions for the discipline and expand how architecture might understand and act upon the conditions in which it operates.

Potential research and teaching themes may include, but are not limited to:

• critical approaches to architectural design and engaged practice
• architecture’s engagement with contemporary social and environmental conditions
• changing forms of urbanization, infrastructure, and settlement
• emerging materials, technologies, and modes of construction
• other areas of inquiry that introduce perspectives, methods, or problems not currently represented within the architecture section

Position overview

This position will be appointed at the rank of tenure-track assistant professor. Candidates should demonstrate strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work both independently and collegially. Successful candidates will bring initiative, intellectual openness, and a willingness to contribute constructively to the academic community.

Immigration/visa sponsorship may be available in very limited situations, but all decisions concerning immigration/visa sponsorship will depend on an evaluation of complexity and risk. We will not engage in immigration sponsorship for this position for individuals subject to the J-1 two-year home residency requirement or who will require consular processing for a visa to come to the United States to begin work at the university.

Performance objectives:

• demonstrate high-quality and inclusive teaching; contribute to curricular development; and advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students
• develop an original and coherent program of scholarly and/or creative work; disseminate that work through recognized public venues; and demonstrate sustained productivity, disciplinary contribution, and growing national/international recognition
• contribute collegially to school governance, recruitment, faculty activities, and appropriate professional, university, or civic service
• demonstrate continuing growth and high-quality performance across teaching, scholarship, and service, documented through annual reviews, with mandatory tenure review normally occurring in year six

Qualifications

Education and experience requirements:

• a terminal degree (MArch, PhD, or equivalent) in architecture or a closely allied discipline, completed by the appointment start date
• a critical scholarly agenda, evidenced by disciplinary recognition (e.g., publications, exhibitions, funded research, awards, or invited engagements) and demonstrated impact on the field, as reflected in the application portfolio, statement, and CV
• a record of high-quality teaching at the graduate and/or undergraduate level, as evidenced by the quality and rigor of student work in the teaching portfolio, and articulated through a teaching/mentoring statement

Additional information

The final offer for this position will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. Salary and start-up packages are negotiated by the department chair and may vary depending on individual circumstances.
