Charles Edwards (Antiques) is a successful, small, privately-owned English company, with showrooms on the King’s Road and a workshop in South Wimbledon, London. The brand is synonymous with antique inspired decorative lighting in the English Country House style. The brand designs, manufacturers, markets and sells its bespoke product direct to an international trade and retail client base. Each piece is made to order, customisable in electrification, size, finish, glass and fabric options.

Job description

Charles Edwards is recruiting a bespoke estimator and buyer. The role will be based in the London workshop, working closely with the design team and production. Responsible for supporting the realisation of custom requests on all product, from initial client enquiry through to aftersales.

Key responsibilities

Technical analysis: Working directly with the sales team and Charles Edwards designers to understand specific requirements for custom pieces. Interpret client and design team drawings, specifications, and schedules to understand project requirements and determine necessary materials and labour.

Supplier sourcing: Researching and identifying manufacturers/suppliers and assessing technical capabilities, capacity, Quality Assurance (QA) and ethical compliance against Charles Edwards standards.

Supplier relationship management: Maintaining and fostering strong relationships with our trusted suppliers while also building relationships with new suppliers. Acting as the main point of contact to support quality, communication and alignment.

Negotiation and procurement: Negotiating pricing, lead times, and contract terms with suppliers to ensure competitive pricing and timely delivery.

Cost estimation: Prepare detailed cost sheets for bespoke projects, considering materials, labour, subcontractors and associated costs.

Sales liaison: Act as the primary contact for sales team for bespoke enquiries, managing customer expectations, and providing technical information and support.

Quality control: Develop standards tailored to each product alongside industry standards. Ensuring that all bespoke items meet Charles Edwards quality standards and client specifications, including sampling and consistency of information and product offering to support long term aftersales.

Order management: Overseeing the entire procurement process, from initial order placement to delivery and internal coordination, working closely with design, sales, and production teams to ensure clear project handovers, accurate planning, and smooth order fulfilment.

Budget and timeline control: Monitor project budgets and timelines, ensuring costs are controlled and schedules are adhered to throughout the project lifecycle.

Inventory management: Managing inventory of materials and components used in bespoke projects.

Trend awareness: Staying informed about current trends in design, materials, and craftsmanship to offer clients the latest options.

Record keeping: Creating and implementing robust systems to maintain accurate records of all orders, contracts, and supplier information. Optimising use of the company’s ERP system.

Skills and experience

Strong knowledge of materials and craftsmanship: A deep understanding of various metals, glass, fabrics, wood and the production processes used in bespoke lighting and furniture is crucial. Ability to research and understand the applicable technical standards.

Excellent negotiation and communication skills: The ability to effectively communicate with suppliers and clients, negotiate favourable terms, and build strong relationships.

Strong organisational and time management skills: The ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritise tasks, and meet deadlines.

Quality management skills: Proven experience of working with and implementing quality management systems, such as ISO standards, or B Corp.

Attention to detail: Ensuring accuracy in all aspects of the procurement process, from order placement to quality control.

Problem-solving skills: The ability to identify risks and resolve any issues that may arise during the procurement process.

Experience in a similar role: four plus years’ previous experience in estimating, buying, procurement, or sourcing for a company specialising in bespoke or custom-made products.

Familiarity with Charles Edwards brand and products: Understanding the company’s aesthetic, values, and craftsmanship is beneficial.

Proficiency in relevant software and tools: Experience with SAGE 200, or equivalent ERP procurement/inventory management software, and Microsoft Office Suite is required.

Full-time, permanent role, Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm.

Based in workshop SW19 3TZ with flexibility to travel to suppliers as needed.
