at UK Cohousing Network

UK Cohousing Network is hiring a nNewsletter and social media editor (freelance/part-time) to join its team remotely.

Location: remote (UK preferred)
Contract: freelance consultancy
Fee: £500 per month (£6,000 per year)
Time commitment: approx. one to two days per month

The UK Cohousing Network (UKCN) is the national body supporting the growth of cohousing and community-led housing across the UK.

We are looking for a newsletter and social media editor to help deliver our emerging communications strategy and grow our audience of practitioners, policymakers, architects, developers and people interested in new ways of living.

This is a small but influential role helping shape how the cohousing movement is understood and discussed across the UK housing sector.

The story we’re telling

Across the UK, new forms of housing and neighbourhood design are emerging that prioritise community, connection and shared life.

Cohousing is gaining renewed attention:

  • award-winning neighbourhoods are being built
  • architects and urban designers are increasingly embracing the model
  • growing numbers of people are seeking ways to live with stronger community connections
  • policymakers are exploring how community-led housing can contribute to the UK’s future housing strategy

The UK Cohousing Network sits at the centre of this growing field.

Through our communications we aim to surface and share the most compelling stories — new communities forming, innovative neighbourhood design, collaborations between residents and developers, and the people helping bring these ideas into the mainstream.

The opportunity

This role is ideal for someone who wants to:

  • help tell the story of a growing housing movement
  • work with leaders shaping the future of neighbourhoods and community life
  • build a visible profile in housing, urbanism and community development
  • develop a portfolio of strategic communications work in a purpose-driven sector
  • work flexibly alongside other freelance or professional commitments

Your work will help connect projects, practitioners and ideas across the country — contributing to the growth and visibility of the cohousing movement in the UK.

You will work closely with the UK Cohousing Network’s leadership, national board, consultants and sector partners to help shape how cohousing is understood and discussed across the UK housing and community development sector.

A key satisfaction of the role will be seeing how thoughtful storytelling builds momentum — as projects connect, new audiences discover cohousing, and a movement continues to grow.

What you’ll do

You will be responsible for delivering a consistent and engaging communications presence for UKCN.

Newsletter:

  • produce a monthly UKCN newsletter
  • curate stories, projects, events and opportunities from across the sector
  • highlight emerging communities, design innovation and policy developments

Social media:

  • manage and grow UKCN’s LinkedIn presence
  • share stories of neighbourhoods, projects and sector progress
  • help connect conversations across housing, architecture and community-led housing networks

Audience development:

  • support the growth of UKCN’s mailing list and network
  • identify opportunities to engage new audiences including housing professionals, architects, developers and policymakers

Content coordination

  • work with UKCN and partners to surface compelling stories from across the sector
  • help promote events, training programmes and conferences

We are open to different backgrounds, but this role may particularly suit:

  • a freelance communications consultant building a portfolio
  • an early–mid career communications professional interested in housing and cities
  • someone working in architecture, planning or housing with strong writing skills
  • a journalist or researcher interested in neighbourhood design and community
  • a communications specialist in the social impact sector

The role works best for someone who is curious, proactive and comfortable working independently.

Skills and experience

Essential:

  • excellent writing and editing skills
  • experience producing newsletters or digital content
  • confidence managing LinkedIn or similar professional platforms
  • ability to translate complex ideas into clear and engaging communication

Desirable:

  • interest in housing, urbanism, architecture or community development
  • experience with Mailchimp or similar newsletter platforms
