Design manager

Yotel is seeking a design manager to cover maternity leave at its London office. 

Yotel is looking for an experienced architect/interior designer to join its design and construction team in London. Candidates should have prior experience of designing and managing hospitality projects from inception through to completion. The role is initially a one-year contract to cover maternity leave. However, given the rate of growth of the company, the opportunity may exist for the right candidate to create a new, full-time role.

Yotel was conceived in 2006, inspired by the luxury of first class travel uncompromisingly designed around guests. Yotel currently operates: four hotels under the YOTELAIR brand in London Gatwick, London Heathrow, Amsterdam Schiphol, Paris Charles de Gaulle; and four city hotels in New York, Boston, Singapore and San Francisco. YOTEL is expanding rapidly with new hotels under development globally, including YOTELAIRs in Singapore Changi Airport and Istanbul New Airport and new city hotels in London Clerkenwell, Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Glasgow, Dubai, Porto, New York Long Island and Miami.

As we grow, we continue to innovate in our different brand segments: YOTEL, YOTELAIR and YOTELPAD. The role will support Yotel’s product growth and estate quality in adherence to brand direction and standards. You will contribute a high level of specialised interior design knowledge and skill in your discipline, working with some independence, managing design implementation on projects to ensure quality control, brand compliance and operational acceptability.

Working together with the SVP design and construction, and the other architects and interior designers on the team, the successful candidate will assist in the development of the next generation of Yotel’s product and its continued concept evolution and innovation. The role will include the constant development of Yotel design and brand standards.

The role and responsibilities

The successful candidate will have:

  • degree or equivalent in interior design and/or architecture
  • 10+ years’ proven experience designing successful hotels, restaurants, bars and F&B spaces
  • proficiency using AutoCAD, InDesign and Photoshop
  • good technical knowledge and experience dealing with issues on-site
  • excellent project management skills and an ability to build strong work relationships, internally and externally
  • confidence communicating with clients, contractors, external interior designers and project managers in design workshops and on site
  • an ability to organise projects, deadlines and team members’ responsibilities
  • a good knowledge of suppliers, materials and specifications (knowledge of Specsources advantageous)
  • a confidence in putting together interior colour schemes and palettes and selecting FF&E items
  • confidence in developing projects, working with local architects, interior designers, specialist consultants, etc., to ensure that the designs are aligned with Yotel’s technical and design standards
  • ability to assist to outside owners/investors and their design teams in understanding and interpreting Yotel’s design standards to specific projects
  • ability to assist in  the design development of the brand and its standards
  • the technical and design experience to review submitted design information, such as drawings and specifications to ensure brand compliance
  • the capability to work alongside the SVP design and construction to create and develop new and existing concepts and be part of the innovation team in compiling new ideas and concepts for trial
  • a healthy curiosity for trends and competitors’ offerings in both related and non-related businesses
  • the ability to travel internationally
