at Dorian Caffot de Fawes

Dorian Caffot de Fawes is offering a front-of-house position in a small, tight-knight environment for a highly organised person, who is willing to help in both administrative and physical tasks involved in selling 20th century design and antiques – in person as well as online – and the daily running of a shop. The job also comprises work in setting up and running a stand in a London-based fair three times a year.

About us

Dorian Caffot de Fawes is a London-based gallery that focuses on the 20th century, typically from 1920 to 1970. Our rigorously-selected stock includes lighting, furniture, objects and pictures for both private collectors and interior designers.

The role

We are looking for a gallery assistant, to both work with the director and run the gallery in his absence.

The role is largely customer-facing but also includes all other aspects of running a shop on a daily base.

The opportunity is a flexible part-time, that can range from two to five days a week, depending on the week, and agreed in advance. Working hours are typically 10:30 to 5:30, never on a Sunday.

Main duties:

  • selling vintage and contemporary antiques and design
  • delivering outstanding customer service
  • building and maintaining client relationships
  • keeping customer contact information up-to-date
  • changing gallery displays
  • coordinating stock rotations
  • cleaning objects conscientiously
  • packing high-value objects for shipping
  • organising the national and international transportation of valuables
  • photographing, researching and cataloguing items to put online
  • updating the website

The position will suit somebody with:

  • a passion for design and interest in design history, though knowledge on these is not essential
  • a natural willingness to help and go the extra mile when serving customers
  • sensitivity combined with strong initiative and problem-solving skills
  • an enthusiasm for eccentric and creative people
  • strong organisational and administrative skills, with attention to detail and accuracy
  • high emotional intelligence
  • flexibility and keenness to be involved in all aspects
  • superb conversation skills
  • the ability to identify changing priorities
    reliability

Freelance status, paid monthly. Hourly rate, depending on experience. Plus commissions on sales.
