Senior lighting designer
at Matter Made
Matter Made is looking for a senior lighting designer to join its team in New York, USA.
Your responsibilities include:
- develop lighting projects from design concept to production-ready drawings, while meeting strict UL and CE standards
- evaluate the feasibility of design concepts relative to appearance, performance, safety, code compliance, installation ease, serviceability/maintenance, manufacture-ability, and cost/price objectives
- collaborate with creative director and design director for briefings and reviews
- oversees testing for UL/CE and any certifications requires for the lighting collection
- management of UL/CE and other certifications
- create technical drawings that are clear to globally based vendors and international production team
- create sketches, illustrations, 3D models, renderings, and CAD drawings in Solidworks
- source vendors for prototyping and production along with production manager
- communicate with vendors, along with production manager, in regards to new developments
- research and evaluate competitive landscape
- works with accounting to maintain budgeting on projects
- research and development of new and existing products
- recommend appropriate colors, materials, and finishes
- work with design director and production to ensure well-planned naming conventions, information accuracy, organizational processes and information hand-off and maintenance
- maintain collection’s collateral for dealers, customers, and production
- constantly looking for ways of improving our current lighting collection
- create drawings for custom orders
- communicates with production design intent for proper quality control, assembly and packaging
- act as a technical consultant for production and sales when needed
- hands-on assistance with showroom installations and trade events
Your experience includes:
- BA/BS/BFA or MFA/MA/MSc in industrial design, product design, furniture design or related degree
- five-ten years of hands-on experience in industrial design in the field of lighting or other related fields
- solid technical proficiency with Solidworks, Keyshot, Adobe Creative Suite, and Google Sheets
- excellent understanding of materials, mechanical connections, wiring, powering LEDs, and manufacturing processes
- experience with sourcing new vendors and parts
- background in facilitating the creation of wiring schematics and voltage calculations for powering LED lighting
- experience working with UL to test for product listings
- a proven track record of putting products on the market and leading projects
- curiosity and eagerness to learn about new technology, socio-cultural trends, and human behaviours
- effective time management, communication, and teamwork skills
- a self-driven personality that is able to take full responsibility within given timelines
- strong problem-solving and sketch visualization skills
- project management experience is a plus
- must be able to travel internationally
- experience solving complex problems through design
- excellent work ethic with high-level of output and ability to self-motivate and manage priorities
- enjoys working collaboratively and can both lead and take direction
- strong aesthetic and presentation skills and a keen eye for detail
- knowledge of and interest in the world of design
The position is full-time based in our Brooklyn, New York studio.
