Public affairs and communications manager

New London Architecture is hiring a public affairs and communications manager to join its team in London.
Reports to: head of marketing
Salary: £30,000 – £35,000 plus bonus
New London Architecture (NLA) is London’s independent centre for debate, discussion and information about the future shape of the capital. Our busy year-round programme of events, exhibitions, publications and research addresses the key issues affecting the city’s built environment and drives the debate about its future. We provide a platform for our broad network of professionals, politicians and the public to meet, share knowledge and shape a better city. We’re London’s greatest advocates, sharing our passion and knowledge about the capital. Our fast-growing membership of over 500 organisations spans both the public and private sector, including architects and designers, developers, engineers, planners, agents, public sector bodies and product manufacturers. We are based in The Building Centre, WC1, where our giant interactive model of central London is free to visit six days a week.
The role
NLA is looking for a public affairs and communications manager to lead on press, public affairs and marketing strategy across the business. This role will have a primary focus on delivering press and marketing for NLA core programme as well as our key events including London at MIPIM and the London Real Estate Forum. You will be involved in working closely with multiple teams across the business delivering the strategy for our growing public affairs work including our APPG and be responsible for delivering the business-wide corporate affair strategy.
Tasks include:
- plan and deliver the communications plan for the NLA core programme including drafting press releases, producing social media content and providing content for mailers and website
- deliver the communications plan for London at MIPIM and London Real Estate Forum including developing media partnerships and liaising with partner organisations on joint activity
- develop the public affairs capacity and create opportunities to influence government policy via the media
- follow and identify trends that are relevant to the built environment industry
- set the NLA’s public relations strategy in-line with organisation objectives, creating opportunities to increase the profile of the NLA and its members in the media
- lead on the planning and delivery of proactive public relations campaigns, producing impactful, well-research, and high-quality copy that successfully capturing the interest of broadcast and print media
- manage the media monitoring, measurement and evaluation of the NLA’s public relations activities
- build and maintain strong relationships with media contacts
- work with colleagues across the NLA to ensure the work of the NLA is communicated via all relevant channels, including social media platforms
What we are looking for
You will be a self-starter with an interest in the key issues influencing London’s development and investment industries, as well as in London and its built environment more generally. You will share our team’s core values by always being informed, rigorous, collaborative and responsive in everything you do.
Required experience and skills:
- strong copywriting skills, proofreading and a keen eye for detail
- experience using Photoshop/InDesign
- good knowledge base using Mailchimp
- strong visual and communication skills
- excellent written and spoken English
- ability to work under pressure and at a fast pace environment
- self-motivated, uses initiative and problem solver
- strong communicator internal/external
- solid experience in a cultural or built environment, with a proven track record in devising and delivering marketing campaigns
- excellent knowledge and understanding of culture and/or built environment sectors
- experience of managing relationships with a number of external agencies and freelancers
- demonstrable experience of print management, distribution and outdoor campaigns
- excellent relationship builder
- excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- ability to prioritise own workload and deliver to deadlines
- a clear and confident communicator with highly developed interpersonal skills and the ability to inspire individuals across teams
- the ability to manage and collaborate with many different stakeholders, both internal and external, including senior managers and directors
- a team player with a ‘can-do’ attitude, personal drive, resourcefulness and initiative
- knowledge of and enthusiasm for the work of New London Architecture
Many of NLA’s events are hosted in the early mornings or into the evenings, so the ability to be flexible around early starts and late finishes is essential.
Holidays 25 days (including Christmas closure) plus bank holidays. Your normal working week is 40 hours, Monday to Friday.
