London, UK
Senior lecturer in history and theory of architecture
at London Metropolitan University
London Metropolitan University is seeking a senior lecturer in history and theory of architecture to join its team in London.
Transforming lives through excellent education
We are committed to making education available to people from all walks of life, creating and advancing social justice, social mobility and access to opportunity and professions. Our graduates benefit personally, but also contribute to society, culture, public service and the economy in all areas of London, the UK and around the world.
Architecture here has a reputation for education built upon a culture of design practice rooted in an ethos of a ‘duty of care’. We understand architecture as real places, spaces, buildings and practices within a culture of care that addresses ethical challenges and adds value to our creativity. But perhaps more importantly our ethos is embedded in a culture of architecture with a specific concern for the concretely‐experienced environment. We also benefit from opportunities for cross‐disciplinary collaborations within the school and actively encourage and maintain academic partnerships with other schools at home and abroad: for example, the Moscow School of Architecture (MARCH).
About the post
Architecture at London Met is a strong community and we are seeking someone who has the ambition and skills to develop history and theory studies particularly in relation to decolonising the curriculum, at the same time as ensuring that our strengths continue to be visible.
The postholder will engage in our research culture within the school of art architecture and design which reflects our values and commitment to social engagement and strongly frames our ethos. We now have an established research centre CUBE which includes three specific areas of activity, and our PhD alumni include practitioners, academics, historians and researchers whose impact is evident through publications, buildings and awards.
There will be opportunities to develop research alongside studio activity – an existing activity most recently evidenced in Athens, Italy and Sierra Leone — and in our ambition to extend our exchange programmes where we aim to develop our live projects, educational collaborations and research outputs beyond our borders.
As a senior lecturer in history and theory the postholder will be a member of the architecture management group, should be collaborative, and also willing to assist in the development of research activity across all areas of the discipline and the wider school.

Professor and head of the department of architecture
