Lighting technical developer

Tom Dixon is seeking a lighting technical developer to join its team in London.

We’re looking for a technical developer to lead and manage the development of our lighting range taking designs through to product launch, as well as provide technical support, manage and support quality and compliance, and have a good understanding the global sourcing and critical path management.

This is a full-time, permanent role based in London, and reports into the head of product.

About the role

In line with our ongoing drive to deliver a robust compliance and quality programme for all our products, we are looking for a lighting technical designer. You will be working in the product management team and helping to ensure our products are designed and developed to meet worldwide standards.

More specifically you will be responsible for:

Technical design and engineering

Deliver fully resolved designs that are suitable for manufacture:

  • work directly with designers and suppliers to ensure all designs are developed in line with manufacturing and material constraints and are delivered at the right price
  • ensure all Tom Dixon lighting products are designed to and beyond the necessary requirements of function, quality and longevity
  • you’ll be responsible for compiling and maintaining the most up to date technical file for all lighting products including all supplier drawings, BOMs, instruction manuals, product and component test reports, transit drop test, tolerance agreements, material specifications and initial purchase order pre-shipment inspections
  • construction design and SolidWorks modelling to an appropriate standard for direct tooling from CAD file
  • conducting the due diligence programme, you’ll ensure all products are tested to up to date compliance requirements and new legal regulations within all defined markets
  • ensure technical drawings and CAD models are suitable for production

Process and strategy

Ensure correct process is followed internally and externally to deliver high quality product documentation and bring fully resolved and compliant products to market:

  • manage technical design sign off process and ensure delivery of designs.
    Support schematic and concept sign off processes
  • develop and manage filing structure and process for all product-related folders
  • develop and implement product engineering strategy

Design management and technical support:

  • in house SolidWorks expert, offering modelling and technical drawing support and training across DRS team
  • manage company intellectual property portfolio and research and development projects, including managing relationship with Pointer and liaison with Briffa
  • deliver 2D and 3D CAD files, drawings and supporting information on range products for external and internal use

Supplier and process management for the lighting category:

  • ensure correct process is followed internally and externally to deliver high quality product documentation and bring fully resolved and compliant products to market
  • managing the delivery of new lighting products through a robust and well-managed critical path, from concept to launch. Support on pre-launch activity, retail, training, photography and assist in creating stories that both inspire and underpin the sales and marketing of new and existing product
  • you will assist in creation of product strategy through research to create product launch range plans that deliver revenue and cogs numbers. You will manage the development of products into existing suppliers and identify and assist in sourcing where there are identified specific production requirements

About you

We’re ideally looking for someone who is already working in a similar role and is eager to take on the challenge of supporting the fast-paced product development of our brand.

More specifically:

  • a proven technical designer – with two to three years’ specific experience working in lighting
  • must be familiar with European standard BS EN 60598 and ideally USA and China certification standards, although this is not absolutely necessary
  • has experience in working with test labs/engineers
  • self-motivated, keen, and a quick learner
