Clemson University is hiring a tenured professor of architecture to join its faculty in South Carolina, USA.
Description
The School of Architecture at Clemson University seeks applications for a tenure-track/tenured professor of architecture who will also serve as the director of the Clemson Architecture Center in Charleston, South Carolina. Candidates for this position must be highly qualified to both direct the Charleston center, and to teach architecture studios, lectures, and seminars. Advanced assistant professors or associate or full professors will be considered for this position. Candidates with experience and qualifications commensurate with a professor of practice are also encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will have expertise in sustainable architecture, urban design and/or engaged community design work, with preference given to expertise in materials technology. The role requires close collaboration with colleagues at Clemson University’s main campus, commitment to engaging with the School of Architecture faculty, staff, and students, developing a research and scholarship agenda, and cultivating connections with the professional architecture community in Charleston and the state of South Carolina.
This is a nine-month academic appointment with a summer stipend for administrative responsibilities. The successful candidate will begin in the Fall Semester of 2022. Start up and salary is commensurate with experience.
The CAC.C bridges academia and practice by teaching in a hybrid environment. Toward this end, students may take internships with local architects, landscape architects, urban designers, craftsmen and contractors. Devoted to public interest design, CAC.C studios are offered in two tracks (urban architecture/design and full scale making within the Community Build program). Working on projects in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, students work collaboratively, often in teams, led by professors. The CAC.C offers coursework for third- and fourth-year undergraduates in architecture and landscape architecture and first- and second-year MArch graduate students. CAC.C aspires to play an increasing advocacy role in the public realm for best practices in architectural and urban design. The CAC.C is also home to our iPAL (Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure) program which capitalizes on our relationship with the professional community in Charleston.
The CAC.C is located at the Clemson Design Center in Charleston. The CDC.C is part of the School of Architecture’s trademarked “fluid campus™” system along with locations in Genoa (Italy) and Barcelona (Spain). The CDC.C is also home to graduate programs in Resilient Urban Design and Historic Preservation. With its unique combination of history, culture, tourism and an expanding economic base, the city of Charleston and the Lowcountry provide a rich learning laboratory.
The School of Architecture at Clemson University offers a NAAB accredited Master of Architecture graduate degree and a Bachelor of Architecture undergraduate degree. The Master of Architecture is comprised of several Plans of Study, such as the Architecture and Health program and an evolving menu of certificate programs. Annually, the Master of Architecture program graduates approximately forty students while the Bachelor of Architecture program graduates roughly one hundred students. These programs have a strong focus on preparing aspiring architects in a full complement of critical design courses. Design Intelligence Quarterly regularly ranks Clemson as one of the Most Admired Architecture programs in the country. In addition to the Architecture degrees, the School of Architecture offers degrees in Landscape Architecture, Historic Preservation, and Resilient Urban Design, with total enrollments of over 500 students, supported by over 70 faculty and staff. The School of Architecture is part of a College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a strong combination of the following qualifications: academic credentials appropriate to national/international leadership in the field of architecture; demonstrated excellence in teaching; a strong record of academic or professional activity research, scholarship, and/or professional design work; the documented ability to develop new collaborations and public or private partnerships for the CAC.C; a record of administrative and organizational experience; positive experience managing personnel; and a record of successful external grant awards. Minimum requirements for the position differ based on the rank of the applicant.
Qualifications for advanced assistant professor-ranked applicants:
- a master’s degree in architecture or a closely related field of study
- a Ph.D. or architectural licensure in one or more US states or extensive professional practice experience is preferred
- tenure track assistant professor experience, during which the candidate was able to generate much of the material needed for a successful tenure and promotion review
Qualifications for associate and full professor-ranked applicants:
- a master’s degree in architecture or a closely related field of study
- a Ph.D. or architectural licensure in one or more US states or extensive professional practice experience is preferred
- academic qualifications and academic and/or professional activity commensurate with the rank of tenured associate or full professor
Qualifications for professor of practice applicants:
- an accredited professional degree in architecture or a closely related field of study
- a master’s degree is preferred
- architectural licensure in one or more US states or extensive professional practice experience
- professional qualifications, experiences, and national/international recognition for professional design work
