London Borough of Hackney is hiring a conservation and design officer to join its team in London.

Hackney Council’s planning service is looking for a conservation and design officer to participate in all aspects of the team’s built heritage work programme.
Hackney has a dense and complex built environment with many heritage assets including approximately 1300 statutorily listed buildings, 470 locally listed buildings, three registered parks and over 30 conservation Areas. Conservation is therefore a very important aspect of planning policy in Hackney. In line with our aspirations for a high-quality environment for a sustainable community, we strive to preserve the borough’s historic built fabric and deliver high quality design.
We are, therefore, looking for someone with ambition, creativity and commitment to ensure that Hackney’s historic environment is conserved and that new development in the borough is designed to meet the highest design standards.
As conservation and design officer you will participate in the active and continuous promotion of conservation best practice within the planning process. You will be responsible for progressing additions to the local list, conservation area appraisals and designations and for providing advice regarding historic buildings. You will also participate in guidance and policy formulation and negotiate positive design changes as part of the development management process. In particular, you will take a lead on technical responses to listed building consent and planning applications within conservation areas, negotiating with developers with an awareness of the competing pressures that inevitably shape development in London.
The successful candidate must have an analytical approach to working, excellent organisational skills and exceptional written and oral communication skills. Knowledge of historic buildings, materials and constructions as well as the various phases of development in London are also essential. You will have a relevant post-graduate qualification and ideally experience of working in a similar role in a local planning authority context. Membership of the IHBC or equivalent would also be desirable.
