at Royal Air Force Museum
Royal Air Force Museum is looking for an exhibitions 3D designer to join its team in London or Midlands, UK.
We are looking to recruit an exhibitions designer (3D) based at our either London or Midlands site. You will join us on a full time, permanent basis and in return, we are offering a competitive salary of circa £34,000 per annum (dependent on location).
The Royal Air Force Museum is a national museum, a Government non-departmental public body (NDPB) and a registered charity, with two sister sites at London and Midlands. Purpose of the exhibitions eesigner (3D) role:
- to lead the design of agreed museum’s exhibition and display projects at both sites from concept through delivery, including permanent, temporary and touring exhibitions, ensuring access for all
- to lead the enhancement of existing displays, working with cross-departmental teams from concept through delivery and hand-over
- to provide project management as required for the development and delivery of allocated projects ensuring delivery to agreed budgets and timescales
Key responsibilities of our exhibitions designer (3D) include:
- working creatively with curators, 2D design, interpretation, audience research, visitors experience, access and learning to create, develop and deliver design concepts, ensuring each exhibition and display (including touring) supports the chosen narrative and type of experience, facilitates the most engaging visitor journey and provides safety of our visitors and collections, while ensuring value for money
- providing support as required for the development and delivery of the Cosford and London master plans
- for major exhibition projects, support the development and delivery of design concepts, providing advice on exhibitions structures’ specification and finishes, to ensure the museum meets its objectives of safety, durability, ease of maintenance and value for money
- project manage cross-departmental teams to ensure the development of allocated exhibitions and displays are progressed to schedule and are delivered on time and budget
- project manage the production and installation of displays. Oversee the work of external contractors and consultants as needed, such as external exhibition designers, graphic designers, model makers, exhibition construction contractors, quantity surveyors, planning supervisors, managing their contracts
- liaising with and task workshop staff for the in-house production of new displays as well as for the maintenance and update of existing exhibitions and displays
What we are looking for in our ideal exhibitions designer (3D):
- educated to degree level in 3D, spatial or interior design or equivalent experience
- demonstrable experience in developing, project managing and delivering high quality exhibitions and gallery displays in a museum or heritage environment
- demonstrable experience in creating/overseeing design and concept briefs and in working with designers, writers and creative agencies in interpreting and realising those briefs, whether in physical or digital formats
- experience in managing small and large budgets (>£1m) and following relevant procurement guidelines tendering to OJEU level
- ability and experience to read and understand technical drawings and technical specifications
- knowledge of current H&S regulation
- excellent Microsoft Office software skills
- working knowledge of a range of design software. These could include: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Rhino3D, VectorWorks
- ability to produce, analyse and report on financial information and management accounts
- good hand sketching skills.
