Haberdashery London is seeking a junior industrial/product designer to join its practice in London.

Haberdashery London are an east London based consultancy who converge art, design and technology. We make lighting based sculptures, products and experiences for a range of high profile clients.

Junior designer

The responsibility of a Junior designer within the product department is to assist in the design, development and delivery of new and existing products within the Haberdashery offer.

On their own, the Junior designer is fully responsible for the success of their projects, guiding the aesthetic, technical and administrative elements of the design and development process, as well as managing expectations by sr. level staff.

Junior designers are expected to manage their time and prioritise tasks to deliver commercially successful products within budgeted time and financial limits.

Junior designers are expected to engage with the Haberdashery business offer, its strengths and weaknesses, and its mission, vision and values, which guide the company.

Business responsibilities:

  • source new suppliers, technologies and manufacturing techniques
  • keep up to date with design related trends and events
  • analyse and improve upon company processes
  • promote Haberdashery through exceptional professional behaviour, verbal and written communications

Project management:

  • manage your time and the time of others working with you to ensure that your projects are delivered on schedule
  • setup and define the design and development tasks, estimate time and budgets, ensuring all stakeholders and sr. staff (if applicable) agrees with the estimations
  • schedule your projects; their tasks, milestones and deliverables to ensure marketing and product launch dates are met
  • manage your development budgets to ensure that projects are delivered within agreed budgets
  • always obtain competitive quotes from relevant suppliers
  • produced detailed manufacturing specification for suppliers to ensure correct costings and production
  • ensure suppliers agree in advance to the Haberdashery terms and conditions and deliver to specification within agreed time frame
  • provide detailed feedback on samples and production pieces ensuring suppliers understand and agree to the points raised, minimising any increases of cost
  • always record meeting minutes and confirm all agreements with internal and external stakeholders in writing via email or letter immediately following relevant meetings
  • ensure production costings are recorded correctly to allow simple analysis.
  • ensure your projects are effectively and clearly filed according to policy
  • where appropriate, and in conjunction with studio management, maintain, improve and develop studio and project processes
  • maintain the Haberdashery traffic system both in terms of contacts and jobs

Design and development:

  • produce CAD models resolving technical and aesthetic details
  • develop solid models, assemblies and drawing files and specifications for suppliers according to the studio templates and best practice
  • liaise with manufacturers to ensure design and aesthetic details are suitable for mass production
  • develop all necessary prototypes, so that all elements are technically resolved and fully specified ready for mass production
  • develop all required visuals and presentations to effectively communicate the greater design and its details within the guidelines of the haberdashery visual identity
  • ensure final sign off samples (gold seal samples) are maintained in perfect condition for QC reference
  • effectively manage document revisions according to company policy.
  • manage the assembly of samples and orders as required
  • keep your work space and the greater studio clean, organised and safe according to policy and common sense
  • discuss designs and technical elements with other staff members throughout the business

Required experience:

One to three years dedicated professional experience in the following areas:

  • work experience as professional industrial/product designer/maker
  • Solidworks or Inventor
  • Rhino/Grasshopper
  • Adobe CS, MS Office
  • electrical system specification, designs and prototyping
  • mechanical design
  • model making
  • materials and finishes knowledge
