Freelance model maker/industrial designer
at Cartier

Cartier is seeking a freelance model maker/industrial designer to join its team in Brooklyn.

Cartier Retail Innovation Lab is looking for a detail-oriented model maker to help answer unknowns and bring ideas to life. This role will support the design and technology teams by designing and building prototypes and fixtures to facilitate the ongoing testing of a new, experimental device. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, and strives to be a pioneer in subject matters that are ambiguous. Experience in mechanical engineering is a plus.

This is a 3-month freelance position, with potential for extension.

Responsibilities:

  • assists in making prototypes, fixtures, test rigs, and technical drawings
  • perform tests and document results
  • evaluate and test the technical feasibility of new concepts
  • develop and iterate more complex prototypes with a goal of technical reliability and applicability
  • ability to translate discussions and concepts to working drawings and prototypes
  • independently manage any outsourced fabrication jobs
  • contribute to team discussions

Qualifications:

  • over three years’ technical expertise in physical interaction development, physical prototyping, and design for manufacturing
  • bachelor’s degree in industrial design, mechanical engineering, or similar
  • general familiarity with industrialized fabrication processes
  • can parse and prioritise complex, interdependent questions
  • understands and follows the concept of “thinking through doing”
  • find creative solutions from limitations
  • highly structured and organized
  • able to operate machine tools
  • CAD skills (such as Solidworks, Rhino, Revit, Illustrator)
  • experience in working with glass (cutting, bonding, tinting, etc.) is a plus
