Sustainable design advisor

HawkinsBrown is looking for a sustainable design advisor to join its team in London.

The role will entail working directly with the partner and sustainability lead and leading other team members in managing the range of activities the team undertake and specific project-related sustainability scopes. Activities will include ongoing project design reviews, winning new work, support for the sectors in best practice approaches as well as organising or recommending training where required.

A specific interest in net zero carbon design with a good understanding of embodied carbon calculation and whole life carbon analysis is required in order to continue the integration of HBERT into our design processes and external advocacy in order to meet RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge obligations as well as emerging, tightening regulation and client requirements.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • ensuring best practice sustainable design is embedded into every project from the earliest stages and the initial targets are monitored and tracked throughout the life of the project
  • aiding development and utilisation of our Whole Life Carbon design toolkit using HBERT (a bespoke Revit plugin), working with colleagues from across the office

Typical activities:

  • assist the sustainability lead in identifying specific sustainability approaches and briefs for projects through the start up review process
  • lead the sustainability design approach for key tender opportunities and early-stage design work
  • support the practice in fulfilling their RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge obligations
  • guide the embodied and whole life carbon measuring and monitoring activities across the office continuing the adoption and integration of HBERT
  • maintain the drive to procure and deliver net zero carbon projects
  • support the drive for passive design and fabric first approaches
  • maintain, promote the use of environmental tools across the office including Ladybug analyses on the pollination cloud and GIS site analysis mapping
  • carry out sustainable design reviews at key project stages
  • continue the management of our programme of post occupancy evaluations
  • provide BREEAM advice where applicable
  • provide advice for material specification based on responsible procurement processes, embodied carbon and waste reduction
  • assist with CPD programme in line with RIBA curriculum
  • assist in research, where applicable
  • ensure the office is operating within the ISO 14001 environmental management certification and policy documentation in regards the design outputs

Working with:

  • architectural, urban and interior design teams
  • HawkinsBrown specialist design studio including BIM coordinators, technical specialists and digital designers
  • BIM coordinators within HawkinsBrown
  • external design team members including clients, engineers and sustainability consultants

Skills required:

  • experience of working in an autonomous sustainability role within a design practice
  • masters level degree in environmental design or equivalent
  • architectural training preferred but not essential
  • an understanding of design and the RIBA work stages
  • highly self-motivated with ability to motivate teams
  • able to implement passive design principles into design strategies
  • knowledge of key thermal modelling and environmental analysis packages
  • excellent communication skills and fluency in written and spoken English
  • professional attitude when dealing with internal and external teams
  • hands on approach with the confidence to provide creative input
  • be adaptable in a fluid design environment
  • be committed to continuous development and sharing of knowledge
  • excellent organisation, problem solving and time management skills
  • evidence of graphic skills
  • ability to research and maintain updated technical skills
  • a familiarity with BREEAM and Passivhaus design
