About us

The Natural History Museum is both a world-leading science research centre and the most visited natural history museum in Europe. With a vision of a future in which both people and the planet thrive, it is uniquely positioned to be a powerful champion for balancing humanity’s needs with
those of the natural world.

We are at a pivotal moment in our history as we launch a new strategy setting out our role as the natural world faces increasing threats. Building on our world-leading collection, global reputation for science and as one of the world’s leading visitor attractions, the NHM has ambitious plans leading up to the 150 anniversary of the opening of the Waterhouse Building in 2031, making this a truly exciting time to be part of the NHM team.

About the role

In support of the Natural History Museum’s new strategy to 2031, we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to transform the Museum though a suite of new galleries and improvements to our public spaces at South Kensington articulated in our developing Public Space Plan, which is also in development for our Museum in Tring, Hertfordshire.

We are seeking a highly talented, experienced Architect to lead on the strategic design, gallery design visioning and feasibility stage of this Plan and develop a series of proposals which explore the design opportunities for our galleries and public spaces. Working closely with the Galleries Development Manager, you will provide architectural and permanent galleries design expertise and leadership and champion sustainable design. While the focus will be on delivering to the Public Space Plan, you will also be involved in the enhancement of our public spaces and galleries generally, estates and fabric maintenance and other spatial and gallery design projects for the Natural History Museum.

About you

You will be a qualified Architect with solid, demonstrable post Part 3 experience. You will have a great portfolio demonstrating experience designing and delivering projects in historic or listed buildings. Museum, Gallery and exhibition design experience is an advantage.
