Technical design manager

Haberdashery London is looking for a technical design manager to join its team in London.
Haberdashery London are an east London based consultancy who converge art, design and technology. We make lighting based sculptures, products and experiences for a range of high profile clients.
We design, manufacture and assemble all of our work, so proven hands-on experience is essential as well as a solid understanding of materials, manufacturing methods and techniques.

Job role:
- provide constructive feedback on all design at all stages of design from concept development to design for manufacture. Guide the designs to ensure they can be produced on time, in budget and to the agreed level of quality
- to guide the design team to ensure designs are considered holistically, balancing aesthetics, budget, design time, delivery time and ease of manufacture and assembly
- education of the designers. Developing the studio knowledge base.
- Willingness to continue to learn and develop skills
- occasional assembly and installation work
Responsibilities:
- oversee and guide all design
- liaise with department directors on all projects
- help develop and guide Hab products
- help in recruiting new design related staff (interviews, assessment criteria etc.)
- help to direct the business within future design opportunities
- keep up to date with technological advances
- R and D of standardised design solutions and investigating new processes and suppliers
- supplier visits to QC and negotiate best pricing while maintaining quality and supplier relationship
- sub assembly design to assist designers
- simple prototyping and sample making
Experience/skills:
- proficient in Inventor or similar CAD software
- background in either mechanical or electrical/electronic engineering would be preferable
- excellent problem solving skills.
- background in lighting and product design would be an advantage
- good ability to accurately estimate manufacturing costs and production times
- very good understanding of a wide range of batch and mass production techniques, including process limitations
- extensive previous experience of workshop processes and tools
- knowledge of electrical installations and safety considerations
- five years experience in a similar role
