We are looking for an urban design/heritage professional to join our busy, dedicated urban design and heritage team.

The borough is proud of its rich culture, history and heritage and at the same time is forward looking, promoting four growth areas where comprehensive regeneration and higher-density development is being encouraged and is coming forward at a pace.

With a great variety of projects and proposals being advanced, we are looking for someone who is passionate and enthusiastic to lead on and champion urban design and heritage, to help shape sustainable development and growth in the borough, and to maximise development opportunities while achieving excellence in placemaking and design quality.  You will lead on policy formulation and guidance for design, shape development schemes from the outset and input into planning applications, advise on the design merits of major regeneration projects and initiatives, as well as support the management and delivery of capital projects.

You will use your negotiation skills and good working knowledge of contemporary building construction/design practices to deliver design excellence through to the implementation stage. An eye for detail will be required.

Role responsibilities

Through the application of a high-level urban design, heritage and other placemaking skills, make a significant contribution to the built environment of the Borough by ensuring that the local distinctiveness and character of the borough is maintained and enhanced through the innovative and practical application of urban design, heritage and landscaping skills through the delivery of high quality design in a range of projects.

You will:

  • assist in ensuring that staff in your team are recruited, managed, appraised and developed, and that effective arrangements are made for their training and development so as to meet service and continued professional development needs and to provide equality of opportunity for all employees
  • responsibility for delivering urban design, heritage and other placemaking projects within the borough to meet your own performance management and quality targets, supervisory responsibility for specified officers in the team, participate in the delivery of service plan objectives and other service improvements and deputise for the team leader when necessary
  • assist in ensuring that services provided by your team are delivered within allocated budgets and opportunities for increasing resources are identified and optimised
  • assist in the promotion of customer satisfaction within your team when delivering services
  • develop the full range of supervisory and professional skills and knowledge to satisfy the requirements of the post

Role-specific qualifications

You will have a RTPI accredited postgraduate degree or a postgraduate degree in a subject closely related to urban design or heritage/conservation, and a membership (or working towards membership) of  a professional institute closely relevant to spatial planning, urban design or heritage/conservation.
