About the role
To act as lead client design management representative for architecture and fabric related planning, design and delivery projects across the museum’s capital and masterplan investment programmes (including galleries and displays).
Projects are museum-wide and range from high-profile front-of-house projects, to innovative infrastructure projects, along with standard renewal and replacement projects in a unique heritage environment and organisation.
To be responsible for driving design quality, performance, coordination and integration across project life cycle in a unique heritage environment and organisation.
To liaise with and provide reports to the programme manager: design management, as well as supporting the CPPM project teams and senior management team, analysing and reviewing on technical design, cost, standards, asset condition, programme and risk.
Key areas of responsibility:
- act as the design representative to enable the successful development and delivery of CPPM capital and masterplan projects, specific to galleries, displays and building fabric inclusive of: arrangements, finishes and materials; responding to collection care/conservation needs; interfacing and coordination with collection information and documentation; interpretation and audio-visual multimedia elements; artificial lighting and daylighting; visitor flow and user access; and, signage and wayfinding
- collaborate with client project managers on internal and external stakeholder input for the museum design requirements covering architecture, galleries, displays and building fabric
- undertake complex decision making and problem solving to ensure that the brief accurately reflects client requirements; and, review designs for capital and masterplan projects, ensuring that all architectural, galleries, displays and building fabric elements are fit for purpose, align to strategic and day-to-day operational requirements, and reflect the brief and to a quality and standard acceptable to the museum
- direct and support project teams (comprising of internal client PM and supply chain consultants) for the development of design, reviewing design documents throughout the process and at key milestones, and resolution of design issues for all architectural, galleries, displays and building fabric elements
- support client project managers in developing scopes (activities and deliverables), business case justifications and gate papers, securing supply-chain resources in line with project requirements and evaluating tenders, monitoring and appraising design process and performance of consultants, advising on time cost and quality
About you:
- educated to degree level in a construction-related discipline, or equivalent experience
- experience of working in a professional design and or project management role within a building/estates department in a museum or similar institution
- experience in planning, developing and delivering projects within a large national museum or similar context, working with design teams on new-build and refurbish projects, expertise on procurement of contractors and consultants with the public sector, able to read and interpret information from architectural drawings and specifications, and a competent user of construction industry document control systems
- management experience, able to work to own initiative, prioritise effectively, and presenting to senior management
- excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to act with tact and diplomacy whilst offering guidance and advice with high-profile people and organisations
