Freelance exhibition designer
at Christie's
Christie’s is looking for a freelance exhibition designer to join its team in London.
The role
Exhibition design at Christie’s is a hybrid practice that integrates aspects of different disciplines: exhibition design, retail design, 3D design and graphic design. Creating immersive exhibitions and graphic design at Christie’s to promote and sell works of art in museum-quality environments that inspires and delights clients.
Bespoke exhibitions and graphics, conveying ideas through sketches, plans and 3D visualisations, creating high-quality CGI in Cinema 4D and V-Ray.
Working in a positive, friendly and adaptable, digital-first environment. The goal is to deliver best-in-class exhibition design and graphics, aligning display solutions with the head of creative’s 360 creative campaigns.
Specific duties and responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- creating and developing innovative concepts, styling for photoshoots and to display works of art and luxury in salesrooms
- working collaboratively with other designers from the creative
- studio to create and develop all aspects of exhibition design, way-finding signage, environmental graphics, bespoke windows, virtual display and projects as required
- team with marketing managers, operations and specialist departments to ensure all projects are seen through to successful completion
- supervise exhibitions and signage installations
- liaise with all project stakeholders, including external suppliers – set builders and printers
- work efficiently with other departments including international offices
- create bespoke environments using CGI for virtual exhibitions
- advising other stakeholder groups of best exhibitions practice
- perform other duties as assigned by manager
Daily activities:
- attending briefing meetings with key stakeholders
- researching and putting together concept presentations
- presenting to key stakeholders at all levels of the organisation
- pulling together costs and quotes
- negotiating quotes
- proofing/amending designs with relevant stakeholders including
- marketing managers and copywriters
- artworking design for production
- liaising with external contractors for production
- streamlining internally with the creative studio team for installs and de-rigs for cost efficiency
- overseeing and co-ordinating on-site signage installs with internal and external stakeholders inc. Security, H&S, operations, front of house, art handlers and suppliers
- problem solving on site and offering solutions
- signing off installations
The candidate:
- a degree in architecture, interior design, exhibition design, theatre design or equivalent
- a minimum of four to five years’ or a strong portfolio of relevant projects if work experience is shorter, creating exhibitions for museums, galleries or retail
- knowledge of architectural and exhibition graphic design and printing techniques
- proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator)
- proficiency in AutoCAD 2D and 3D for easy adjustment of plans, export and share of files
- proficiency in Cinema 4D and V-Ray
- ability to learn Christie’s software as appropriate
- strong attention to detail
- knowledge of the use of colour and typography in an exhibition environment
- ability to project manage, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including superior written and spoken communication
- ability to remain calm under pressure and work to tight deadlines
- ability to work independently while following the directions received by the manager
- demonstrate interest in art, exhibitions, luxury and retail environments
