James Mackintosh Architects is looking for an architect to join its team in Oxford, United Kingdom.
The role:
We have an exciting opportunity for an architect with a minimum of five years-post professional qualification experience to work on a wide range of conservation projects, including designing alterations for high end residential schemes, the conservation and repair of some of the nations most treasured buildings, regeneration and change of use schemes.
You’ll be excited by bringing buildings back to life, adapting them sustainably for the future, while being sensitive to the natural environment around them.
As part of our new Oxford office you will be responsible for supporting the development and success of the practice.
Due to the travel required for this role, you must hold a full clean driving license with access to a vehicle, business mileage claimable through expenses.
What you will be doing:
You’ll be part of a team of conservation architects and designers to providing high-quality design solutions that meet our client requirements. We do not have an in-house style – we listen to our clients and work with them to deliver their aspirations through imaginative and creative feasibility studies.
You will be responsible for leading and coordinating technical packages of work to the highest conservation standard and delivering projects on site to time and budget on a range of projects including mansion houses, manor houses, old rectories, and farmsteads throughout the Cotswolds and beyond.

Our training aspirations for the role include providing:
- opportunities for you to develop as a project architect confidently running your own projects and contributing to a long term sustainable historic built environment through promoting site specific ecology and biodiversity values.
- the experience to qualify as an architect on the RIBA or AABC conservation register. We will provide support in the preparation of your application and also provide training through the RIBA or CIOB schemes
- a developed understanding heritage planning policy and significance, how to apply this in design work and the preparation of heritage statements
- training on carrying out condition surveys and quinquennial inspections
- developing construction skills through prioritising project information and fully understanding the requirements for tender and construction information for different projects as well as the pros and cons of different procurement routes to be able to adequately advice clients on the merits of different options
- development of technical aspects of construction and traditional construction materials and techniques
- developing design skills through internal design reviews and relevant CPD
- development as an architect generally through external CPD sessions through the RIBA curriculum, and internal CPDs’ including reviews of design, technical submissions, and health and safety project assessments
Who we are looking for:
- member of Architects Registration Board (ARB)
- accredited in building conservation, or have the motivation to achieve it
- good knowledge of historic building conservation, maintenance and repair, with a commitment to best practice
- successful track record of managing projects and budgets, ideally within conservation
- experience in contract management and contract administration
