Luke Hughes Studio is hiring a senior designer to join its team in London.

The Luke Hughes studio was established in 1981 in Covent Garden and specialises in designing ‘furniture in architecture’ for clients who occupy great buildings, for whom architecture is used to project something of the values of their particular institution.

The building types are as diverse as the Romanesque chapel in William the Conqueror’s Tower of London or an international business school for Yale University by Norman Foster. Clients are as diverse as the Trades Union Congress or Buckingham Palace. Room types include research laboratories, lecture theatres, dining halls, libraries and conference facilities. In the last few years, our work has been increasingly international, especially in the USA and China.

Based in a vibrant West London office close to Covent Garden, we have a hybrid working arrangement centred around flexible core hours of 10 am to 4 pm.

Responsibilities:

• work with the sales team to fulfil briefs ensuring we retain the company brand and vision
• maintain creative standards whilst ensuring the commerciality and profitability of designs
• lead design efforts, resolve complex design issues and coordinate work on projects
• review designs and technical drawings of other junior designers
• good organisational skills and ability to work on multiple projects at the same time.
• lead by example, share your knowledge and experience with fellow designers, with ability to mentor designers

Within the design process:

• develop design concepts through to producing manufacturing drawings
• model and render designs for presentations through to manufacture
• adapt previous and standard furniture designs where appropriate, or design fully bespoke furniture
• attend client meetings, survey spaces and visit makers as required
• extensive knowledge of design principles and aesthetics, space planning, materials and finishes
• excellent draughting skills with ability to communicate simply and clearly through drawings
• ability to work as part of a team as well as individually, to plan and organise work to meet tight deadlines
• thorough knowledge of construction techniques and manufacturing processes
• thorough understanding of and ability to design in a range of materials, specifically solid wood, metal, glass and stone

Qualifications:

• design degree or equivalent qualification.
• eight plus years experience in furniture design
• essential to have advanced skills with SolidWorks and AutoCAD
• desirable to have working knowledge of KeyShot, Adobe Creative Suite and MS Office
• practical joinery experience would be a considerable advantage.
