Architectural employment requirements
BACA Architects is recruiting for a range of roles from Part-II to experienced qualified architects to join its London-based architectural design team. New projects include floating buildings and infrastructure, hotel, leisure, residential, from luxury private to urban blocks and research/development.
Role purpose
Applicants should be able to support feasibility studies, planning application submissions, detail design and tender documents under the guidance of a director or senior staff. With more senior and experienced applicants being expected to take projects from design through to completion, as per pre-agreed targets with minimal intervention or guidance from a director.
All applicants should have a minimum of one year’s practical UK-office based experience, working on a range of projects including one-off private houses.
You will be working as part of a compact team in a design based studio, and with the right attitude and performance, be afforded the opportunity to take ownership or expanding roles on projects.
Strong design skills, appreciation and IT skills, including knowledge/experience of Adobe Creative Suits Indesign, and Vectorworks or other CAD-based software, AutoCad, SketchUp Rhino, etc. in a working environment are essential, as are good hand drawing and graphical presentation skills.
General skills
- RIBA accredited qualifications or internationally recognised equivalent
- legal authorisation to work in the United Kingdom
- a demonstrable passion for architecture, the built environment generally, and the welfare of users of that built environment
- wide based, general architectural skillset with the ability to visualise, appreciate, and represent designs and concepts in three-dimensional space and form
- intuition, imagination and a strong eye for architectural detail
- enthusiasm, personable, adaptable and committed personality, suited to working in a compact team
- strong verbal and written English communication skills
- good personal organisation, planning, personal time/resource management, as well as an ability to work to deadlines
- good visual awareness and eye for detail
Basic professional skills required
- high proficiency in 2D and 3D hand drawing and graphical representation. Physical modelling skills are an advantage
- high proficiency in the production and management of 2D and 3D CAD drawings (Vectorworks, AutoCad, or Microstation etc.
- medium to high proficiency with preparing presentation material using software such as MS powerpoint and Adobe suite – Photoshop, InDesign, etc.
- understanding of the building process, key RIBA work stages and the role and responsibilities of an architect
- understanding of procurement process, contract law
- ability to manage small building projects – up to £1M) from start to completion with minimal intervention or guidance from a director
- personal time management and adherence to office timeframes throughout the office life of a project
- preparation of time sheets and project status reporting to directors
Extended professional skills required
- ability to work on medium to large building projects from start to completion either with regular supervision by director or other senior staff or as part of a team
- creating building designs and highly detailed technical drawings, schedules and specifications by both by hand and computer-aided design – CAD applications and presentation techniques
- detailed drawing and specification production, to current best practice and NBS standards
- determining the appropriate material selection, including understanding building science, waterproofing, acoustic levels, U-values, SAP values etc
- identifying solutions to constraining factors in planning legislation, building control legislation, environmental constraints and project budget
- working closely with and managing in-house teams, and members of extended design teams such as engineers, quantity surveyors and specialist designers
- writing and physical presentation of reports, proposals, tender applications and tender proposals
- preparation and submittal of feasibility studies, planning applications, building regulations and other statutory applications
- making sure the project is running according to schedule and budget
- contract administration, reviewing valuations, preparing certificates etc.
- travelling regularly to building sites, proposed locations and client meetings
- playing a pro-active part in office life, management
