The role

Grimshaw’s New York Studio is seeking a computational design specialist to support our architectural teams in the use of computational design (CD) tools and workflows on project work and contribute to the wider CD capabilities of Grimshaw.

Key tasks:

  • provide support, troubleshooting and guidance for CD workflows
  • ​provide ongoing training to project teams in the use of CD tools (Rhino, Grasshopper, Dynamo, programming languages)
  • ​provide ongoing advice to project teams on how and when to implement CD workflows
  • assist project teams with CD-related work when necessary and beyond the skills of project teams
  • continually seek to identify opportunities to improve existing workflows or capabilities
  • ​ensure all project CD work complies with the global CD standards

Skills:

  • advanced proven knowledge of Rhino
  • advanced proven knowledge of Grasshopper
  • ​knowledge of Dynamo is highly beneficial
  • knowledge with interoperability workflows with Revit is highly beneficial
  • knowledge of Kangaroo, Ladybug, Honeybee is beneficial
  • knowledge of programming with C#, VB, Python is beneficial
  • familiarity with VR/AR platforms is beneficial

Desired experience and competencies:

  • degree in architecture, engineering, architectural technology, or another relevant subject
  • authorised Rhino trainer certification is beneficial
  • must have at least three years of relevant experience with computational concepts
  • ​experience in liaising/coordinating with engineers and technology teams of other relevant disciplines
  • ​experience with large scale projects and teams
  • ​experience in collaboration and understanding of BIM concepts and Revit
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • must be able to clearly articulate advanced concepts in a way that team members of all levels can understand
  • ability to demonstrate competence in promoting computational design
  • ability to identify and correlate computational design workflows with existing or future projects
  • collaborative, sharing work ethos
  • highly organised with the ability to prioritise and balance workloads
  • the ability to rapidly pick up new software skills as required is essential
  • should possess the ability to train teams in relevant workflows and software packages
  • a methodical approach to problem-solving is required
