PYC Construction is seeking an architectural technologist to join its team in Welshpool, Wales.
Job description
PYC is a family run business located in a beautiful area of mid wales, based in our certified PassivHaus office, next to our purpose-built workshop. We design and manufacture timber frame buildings, using a closed panel system that we deliver and install on site in two weeks.

Our timber frame building system uses high performance products, where we produce sustainable and energy efficient buildings. The Passivhaus standard is an important part of our construction ethos. About the role
We are looking for an architectural technologist to join our design team, working at our offices in Welshpool, Mid Wales. We are seeking someone with at least three years’ of experience post qualification and an interest in low energy, sustainable building design.
You will be working on a variety of projects mainly on RIBA stages 1 to 5, along with the opportunity to see your projects being manufactured in our workshop and installed on site.
Key duties and responsibilities:
- producing high quality drawings for all stages of the design process (RIBA Stages 1-5) along with detailed specifications and tendering packages.
- integrate Passivhaus and sustainability principles in the concept and technical design
- independently manage design projects, cross checking and providing feedback to other members of the design team
- liaising with clients, consultants, contractors and other professionals and issue design clarifications
- coordinating the design of our timber frame projects, involving liasing with the sub-contractors, consultants, project manager and clients to ensure the design process runs smoothly and effectively throughout ensuring any clashes in design are resolved promptly
- responding to actions from management, completing them in agreed timeframes, working with other team members where appropriate
- attend site visits
- assisting in securing new work, providing commercial and design input
Who we are looking for
Essential skills and experience:
- architectural technology degree (CIAT) or relevant qualification
- three plus years’ experience in design and construction, working in an architectural practise or construction company
- experience working on projects across all RIBA work stages
- a creative approach to design and construction
- experience in using Revit and CAD for design and construction projects
- working knowledge of UK Building Regulations, British Standards, CDM and best practice
- knowledge of PassivHaus, or basic understanding with the willingness to learn
- proficient in Microsoft Office software
- excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- ability to create design intent drawings and to translate them into accurate technical/construction drawings
- strong organisational skills with the ability to work independently and/or as part of a team
- knowledge and understanding of sustainable construction products & techniques
- right to work in the UK
Desired:
- awareness of WUFI and THERM and other thermal bridge modelling software
- experience in timber frame design
- CEPH PassivHaus designer qualification
- proficient in 3D architectural BIM CAD package ArchiCAD or Revit
- proficient in SketchUp
Job type: 32 to 40 hours a week, permanent, Welshpool-based
