Haworth Tompkins is seeking a human resources manager to join its London studio.

Founded in 1991 Haworth Tompkins is a Stirling Prize-winning studio of around 100 people, working across the culture, housing, mixed use, industrial, education and master planning sectors. We are an Employee Ownership Trust, a B Corp, founding members of Architects Declare and named the AJ100 Practice of the Year in 2020 and 2022.

The human resources manager collaborates closely with the HR working group to develop and implement employee welfare initiatives and promote a culture of open communication, fairness, and equal opportunities. Reporting to the managing director, the HR manager will provide daily HR support to all employees.

The role can either be for 32 or 40 hours per week, depending on the candidate. The candidate should be willing to work 60% of their time from our studio.

Employee lifecycle and administration:

  • ensure employee details are up to date and maintain accurate staff records in relevant databases
  • respond to employee day-to-day queries, provide guidance and advice, maintain file notes and escalate any issues to the managing director as necessary
  • engage in check-ins and stay in touch with employees on parental leave, extended sick leave and sabbaticals and coordinate and be part of return-to-work meetings
  • onboarding and offboarding staff, including right to work checks, inductions, probation reviews and exit reviews, ensuring suggest improvements are coordinated to support a culture of continuous improvement and feedback
  • preparing and issuing HR-related documents, including contracts, employer references, salary sacrifice letters, parental leave and pay entitlement letters
  • support the recruitment team with hiring needs and ensure recruitment policy and procedures are followed throughout the recruitment lifecycle, post job adverts and organise interviews
  • work closely with the finance manager on benefits management and payroll adjustments
  • manage leave entitlements, overtime and TOIL awarding in line with principles set out in our policy
  • coordinate cyclical HR activities such as annual appraisals, semiannual feedback reviews and salary reviews
  • check in with employees and gather early insights into any people-related themes by way of continuous improvement in communication with the directors
  • support the managing director in handling grievance and disciplinary procedures

Training and development:

  • establish a training and development strategy following annual appraisals, maintain training records, coordinate trainings and budget, support and oversee the CPD calendar to ensure CPD programme aligns with RIBA core requirements
  • manage apprenticeships, in house mentoring programme and maintain the skill matrix up to date to support the development of staff

Policy development and driving initiatives:

  • contribute to the continuous development of the staff handbook to communicate company policies and procedures and ensure legal compliance is in line with best practices
  • assist in conducting the studio satisfaction survey, annual diversity survey, track progress and implement initiatives that help drive the EDI agenda
  • analyse data to ensure an evidence-based approach to HR strategy and policy development such as overtime, internal diversity data and recruitment diversity
  • carry out research and benchmarking exercises to support the development of policies and initiatives

Wellbeing:

  • develop the well-being strategy, establish initiatives and champion well-being within the studio
  • offer mental health support to all staff by becoming a mental health first aider

Additional responsibilities:

  • work closely and in collaboration with the HR working group and EDI focus groups
  • stay updated on employment law, provide updates to stakeholders and ensure compliance
  • actively participate in the Architecture HR Network and Architecture Race Network
  • produce quarterly HR reports and monthly overtime reports to support the monthly project reviews
  • manage the sponsorship licence, CoS certificates and visa applications

Required skills and experience:

  • CIPD level 5 or equivalent experience
  • minimum of three to five years’ experience in a human resources role preferably within the creative sector
  • experience in HR administration and employee lifecycle management
  • strong knowledge of employment laws and regulations
  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information
  • strong attention to detail and meticulous organisational skills
  • problem-solving and decision-making abilities
  • ability to process and analyse data
  • proactive and able to work independently
  • commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion

Aditional information

Haworth Tompkins operates a hybrid working model and we expect all members of staff to work three days or more from the studio. We work as a collaborative and proactive studio where communication and knowledge sharing is encouraged.
