Newcastle upon Tyne, UK
Senior project architect
at ALT Studios
ALT Studios is seeking a senior project architect to join its team in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.
1.0 overview of the role
Position: senior project architect
Type: full-time, permanent
Salary: £40,000 to £52,000 (depending on experience)
Start date: Summer 2025 (or earlier depending on availability)
We’re looking for a senior project architect to join our close-knit, design-led studio and help shape the next chapter of ALT Studios.
Our work spans private residential, hospitality, retail, and workplace projects – each defined by spatial clarity, material depth, and creative rigour. Based in Newcastle, we operate nationally with a belief in architecture that’s grounded, responsive, and beautifully made.
This is a hands-on role for someone confident leading projects and contributing meaningfully to a growing practice. You’ll collaborate with directors to uphold design quality, navigate delivery, and maintain momentum across varied sectors and scales.
Key responsibilities include steering early concepts, delivering detailed construction packages, and acting as a main point of contact throughout. There is room to develop and apply specialist expertise, lead complex workstreams, or support multiple projects simultaneously – depending on your interests and the needs of the studio.
We’re also looking for someone who brings clarity, initiative, and care to studio culture – someone who values mentoring, creative dialogue, and helping to build a resilient, purposeful practice from the inside out.
2.0 your responsibilities:
- lead projects from initial concept through to completion and handover
- deliver detailed construction packages with clarity, precision, and care
- oversee design development, statutory submissions, and coordination
- ensure compliance with current building regulations, planning policy and best practice design standards
- coordinate procurement, manage tender processes, and when required lead contract administration
- build strong relationships with clients, consultants, and contractors
- act as lead consultant during all RIBA stages, including chairing meetings and resolving on-site issues
- depending on the project and studio needs, you may also lead a complex package within another scheme or offer specialist design or technical input across multiple projects
- mentor junior staff and contribute to internal design reviews
- help shape our systems, culture, and strategic direction
- represent ALT Studios professionally – within the studio and externally.
3.0 experience
We imagine this role suiting someone with at least five years’ post-Part 3 experience (ARB or RIBA), who’s confident delivering projects across all RIBA stages – from early concept to site completion. You’ll bring experience managing live projects, coordinating teams, and acting as the main point of contact for clients, consultants and contractors.
You likely have sound knowledge of UK Building Regulations, planning processes, procurement, and construction contracts (JCT or equivalent), alongside hands-on site experience and confidence in negotiation and decision-making.
You’re probably skilled in Revit, confident developing detailed construction packages, and comfortable producing coherent information sets for tender and delivery. Adobe Creative Suite is desirable, as is the ability to draw and sketch with clarity.
Above all, you’re someone with strong communication skills – visual, verbal and written – who takes initiative, solves problems, and brings positive energy to the studio.
4.0 beyond projects
At ALT Studios, we believe culture influences architectural quality. We deliver thoughtful design – with care, curiosity, and purpose.
As senior project architect, you’ll shape how we work as much as what we create. Mentoring junior designers, nurturing clients, refining collaboration.
We welcome input at every level – evolving traditions, improving workflows, and bringing fresh ideas. We value long-term thinking over short deadlines. Creative risk is encouraged. Dialogue is essential. Individual perspectives matter.
Our culture is built on trust, openness, and shared responsibility – to each other, clients, and collaborators. This role is for someone who wants to invest in a growing practice – as a contributor to its direction and momentum.
