Aman Interiors is seeking an ambitious and talented freelance detailed furniture designer to join its team in London.

This is a freelance role with an immediate start.

Reporting to the head of design, this role focuses on the design of furniture from concept to prototyping, ensuring each product reflects Aman’s commitment to quality and sophistication. The designer will bring concepts to life with an emphasis on detailed design. Candidates should demonstrate competent knowledge of and a natural passion for design, coupled with a strong drive to succeed and a desire to create beautiful, timeless furniture designs.

The successful candidate will be comfortable balancing creative strategy with execution, ensuring designs align with Aman’s brand ethos and aesthetic standards.

Key responsibilities

Design and concept development:

• produce concept sketches, 3D ideation, material studies and visual presentations to communicate design ideas to the wider team, working to a provided brief
• develop furniture concepts into detailed 3D designs for review, with particular sensitivity to form, proportion, scale, materiality and craftsmanship
• design and test furniture concepts within interior environments, ensuring cohesion between furniture, space, materials and architectural context, working closely with the interiors team
• contribute to the creative development of timeless, elegant and sophisticated furniture designs suitable for luxury residential, hospitality and lifestyle settings

Detailed and technical design:

• develop detailed furniture models using SolidWorks, ensuring accurate, robust and production-ready 3D files
• critically assess and refine design details, with sensitivity to form, function, proportion, materiality and craftsmanship
• refine and optimise furniture designs while considering manufacturing capabilities, material constraints and production feasibility, without compromising the original design intent
• produce comprehensive technical drawings, specification sheets, renders and supporting design documentation for internal review and handover to the product development team
• translate approved 3D designs into detailed technical packages suitable for prototyping and manufacturing
• work closely with the product development team to ensure all technical documentation is accurate, complete and suitable for prototyping and production
• review and select material samples provided by manufacturers and suppliers, ensuring consistency with the approved design intent and quality standards
• support the development and review of prototypes and production samples, ensuring design details are refined and executed to the highest standards

Project coordination and documentation:

• maintain clear and accurate design documentation from concept development through to prototyping
• prepare and support tracking documents, including Excel spreadsheets for product codes, design status, materials, specifications and supplier information
• coordinate effectively with internal design, product and procurement teams, as well as external manufacturers and suppliers
• ability manage the junior designer, ensuring deadlines and deliverables are met
• ensure all design outputs are organised, clearly communicated and suitable for internal review, client presentation and supplier execution

Required skills and experience:

• minimum of four years’ experience in furniture development, ideally within the luxury furniture, interiors, hospitality or residential sector
• a strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in furniture detailing, materiality and production
• advanced proficiency in SolidWorks is essential, including surface modelling and the creation of detailed, production-ready technical drawings
• experience developing furniture from concept through to prototype and technical execution
• strong understanding of furniture construction, materials, manufacturing techniques and production processes
• proficiency in Rhino, KeyShot, Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign) and Microsoft Office 365
• AutoCAD skills are advantageous
• strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple furniture design projects simultaneously
• experience preparing specification sheets, technical drawings, renders, product codes and design documentation
• experience in the interior design sector is advantageous

Qualifications:

• degree or equivalent qualification in furniture design, product design, industrial design, interior design or a related discipline is preferred
• a strong portfolio is required and must demonstrate furniture design capability, technical development and production understanding
• fluency in English, both written and verbal, is required
