Position profile
Ralph Appelbaum Associates (RAA) is seeking a full-time visual designer (hybrid) to join our award-winning design studio in London which over the last 25 years has worked with museum and corporate clients across the UK and Europe.
At the heart of RAA’s design philosophy is the desire to seamlessly integrate the visitor experience and the architectural environment. The visual design team on any project are responsible for conceiving, developing and delivering the visual expression of the project’s design. This may encompass graphic identity, interpretive graphics, illustrations, brand identity, specialist graphics, wayfinding and more. Additionally, specialists within the visual design department contribute to the conceptualization of media, motion graphics, and interactive experiences, bringing a coordinated approach to the visitor’s visual experience. The visual design team works with creative directors, architectural/physical designers, media designers and content staff in integrating a project’s visual elements into a cohesive experience.
The visual designer works under the direction of senior project leadership, physical and visual designers, and content developers to create an engaging and cohesive system of visual elements which represents an exhibit’s narrative. They are involved at all stages of projects and help to communicate the narrative through graphic design in exhibit, print, identity, and multimedia formats.
This position is hybrid, with a requirement to be in the studio two to three days per week and the option to balance in-person work in the London studio with working remotely depending on the needs of the studio and individual preferences.
Responsibilities:
- implements visual identity throughout all project graphics
- creates base files for and develops graphic elevations
- creates project presentations and deliverables files
- creates and develops artwork for graphics
- produces visual identity style guides
- organises and coordinates graphic resources
- works on multiple projects concurrently to meet project deadlines
- supports other visual design staff
- contributes to exhibit visual identity development
- designs and produces graphic systems, layouts, and documentation (graphic layouts, graphic elevations, maps, illustrations, diagrams, fabrication specifications, schedules, etc.)
- assists in graphic production
Requirements:
- degree in graphic design, communications, or closely related field
- three to five years’ experience as a graphic design professional
- previous experience or demonstrated interest in exhibit design strongly preferred
- experience in hands-on production
- ability to work on site/ in studio and to travel off site for client meetings
- highest standards of personal and professional integrity
- collaborative and inclusive work style
- ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- strong organizational, multi-tasking, and time management skills
- proactive approach to task management
- strong attention to detail
- proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace
- proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop)
- strong content and editorial grasp
- background in the knowledge and design of typefaces
