Middleweight retail designer

Argent Design is seeking a middleweight retail designer to join its team in London.

Report to: design team leader

Purpose of role

To be responsible for contributing to work on a variety of retail design projects, ensuring the highest standards of technical and creative input to the team’s project work. This includes responsibility for the design and management of an allocated project on a day-to-day basis with guidance from the design team leader.

Key responsibilities:

  • source reference material and carry out research to illustrate the client’s competitor market and to illustrate brand personality
  • support the team in concept creation, development and presentation
  • produce concept work using hand sketches or computer software to a high standard
  • produce drawing packages under supervision suitable for statutory approvals (planning, building regulations) and tender
  • attend site visits with other team members and help others to liaise with contractors and design/construction team
  • complete risk assessments for projects ready for checking
  • attend client meetings and, with the support of the associate designer or design team leader, contribute to client presentations
  • record design team or site meetings either by minutes or notes
  • provide support and direction to more junior members of the team
  • as directed take responsibility for some project communication, including liaising with the design and construction team and written communications
  • build knowledge of retail markets, our clients and their competitors
  • actively seek inspiration and reference from sources outside of the business to support creative design solutions
  • build upon existing skills and develop software skills further such as AutoCAD

Technical skills and experience:

  • degree in interior design or design related discipline
  • ability to demonstrate a high level of creative thinking in work
  • experience of working on interior design projects, ideally including projects within the retail sector
  • proven experience of working from concept to completion stage and ability to manage own workload
  • good working knowledge and proficiency in AutoCAD or an alternative 3D modelling package such as SketchUp
  • good visualisation skills through sketches to presentation level
  • intermediate knowledge of materials

  • demonstrate understanding of DDA requirements
  • strong communication skills with the ability to communicate with fellow designers, clients and suppliers on a regular basis
