Introduction
Architype is seeking an experienced senior architect to join the management team of our expanding Scottish studio, at associate level.
With 35 staff in our Edinburgh studio and a growing portfolio of major projects in Scotland, this new post at Architype offers an exceptional opportunity to develop your career at management level and at the cutting edge of zero carbon and sustainability.

Architype is currently evolving a hybrid working policy to enable staff to work flexibly from both home and from our studios. All staff are fully supported with equipment to enable hybrid working and are integrated into our collaborative team culture both on and offline.
In Edinburgh we occupy an exciting new studio space in Leith and we would be anticipating our new associate being based mainly in our studio, but with the flexibility to work from home on one or two days a week if preferred.

- for staff outside this area: £40,000 – £55,000

Job description
A qualified Part 3 architect registered with the ARB and with a minimum of four years’ experience, capable of taking overall responsibility for overseeing and delivering a number of separate projects and managing a team of architects and assistants. Associates will be entrusted with day to day contact with key clients and, together with directors and associate directors, will contribute, through the local management team meetings, to the strategic direction of the practice, its design ethos, quality management systems and marketing plans.
Alongside the directors and associate directors, associates will be expected to set and maintain high standards of design and establish sustainability targets for individual projects. In general, associates will be expected to keep abreast of current legislation and government policies in respect of the built environment and contribute to topical professional debate through press articles, reports and speaking at seminars and conferences, as appropriate.
The role of the associate will include that of project architect on individual projects. Associates will be expected to assume responsibility for a number of separate projects and will be expected to delegate design tasks to appropriate levels of staff in such a manner that every project attains the highest design standard and is delivered in a profitable way.
Core purpose
The core purpose of an associate is:
- to directly act as an associate
- to assume responsibility for overseeing and delivering a number of projects, under the line management of an associate director
- to lead and motivate the senior and project architects directly running projects
- to directly manage projects where required
Key responsibilities
Associates have the following key responsibilities:
- assist and support directors and associate directors in their tasks of winning work and managing the finances of the practice
- assist in staff training and personal development
- assist with the development of client contacts, identification of work opportunities and preparation of submission documents
- participate in and contribute to local management meetings and wider combined management
- assist in the preparation of project quality plans and monitor their implementation
- assist in the preparation of monthly job costing summaries
implement the quality [ISO 9001] and environmental [ISO 14001] management system in respect of project work under their control and general aspects for which they may be responsible including specifically: - communicating to the organisation the importance of meeting customer as well as statutory requirements
- reviewing design quality progress
- filling out improvement logs
- assist with programming and resource allocation/management
- assist in the preparation of CAD protocols and monitor their implementation, together with Associate Directors
- take responsibility for project related Health and Safety matters and implementation of CDM regulations
- assist with the preparation and distribution of marketing material
