The role

Working closely with the partners and fellow directors, the design director, 3D, will bring a critical visual eye and contemporary sensibility to design processes and will lead visual strategy as it relates to the physical experience, industrial design and built environment of client projects. The position will lead a team of industrial designers and architects to realize exhibitions, furniture design and spatial projects from concept to production, through schematic design, design development, construction documents and construction administration phases. A successful candidate will be an active, creative and facile problem solver who can collaborate with the team at Standard Issue to realize impactful experiences that advance the design dialogue in the field of experience design and architecture and allow our clients to be on the cutting edge of contemporary discourse.

This position is a key member of the leadership team in the studio, and as such will be expected to forward business development initiatives, future state planning for the studio, and support the professional development of design staff. They will also be expected to develop Standard Issue’s engagement with accessible design including and going beyond ADA guidelines.

The design director, 3D, must also possess an innate curiosity for all disciplines of design as they will frequently collaborate and lead across disciplinary lines. They must be able to consider designs at all scales, from small objects to full spaces, and how they interact.

Successful candidates will have ten or more years of experience in architectural design, exhibition design, industrial design or architecture.

M.Arch, MFA in industrial design or equivalent degree required.

Responsibilities

  • lead a team of industrial and architectural designers to develop innovative designs for Standard Issue clients, advancing design dialogue within and outside our field
  • maintain high level of engagement and collaboration with clients and key stakeholders to ensure the realization of bold and exciting designs
  • lead and manage overall vision, quality control, and mandates for the 3D design team including concept development, circulation and planning, display, furniture, documentation and bid packages, working with a range of budgetary and schedule demands
  • advise and mentor team members to anticipate and resolve questions and challenges with clients and stakeholders
  • prepare design document drawings (floor plans, sections, elevations and detail drawings), for client reviews, fabrication and/or construction bid documents
  • strategize and lead the production of 3D models and visualizations for design and presentation purposes
  • other duties as assigned

Benefits details

This position is full-time 37.5 hrs/week and includes access to a full slate of benefits (PTO, sick days, health/dental/vision insurance, 401(k) 4% salary match after one year of employment, commuter benefits, summer Fridays).

We currently work on a hybrid in-office/off-site arrangement with employees, with four required days onsite per week.

Salary details

The salary for this position is approximately $120,000-$130,000 per annum, depending on experience.
