The studio works at elemental scale and in intricate detail. While much of the studio’s iconic work is in metal or resins, it invites new members with interests in varied materials and processes.
Senior designer job description
Based Upon is seeking a senior designer with creative director potential. You will take a lead in shaping both self-initiated and commissioned works from origination and iteration through to fabrication and final delivery. You’ll work in parallel across a mix of projects at all stages of the cycle. It is a material-led, idea-driven role within a collaborative and fast-moving studio, suited to someone with exceptional creative flair, strong aesthetic judgment, and a deep technical understanding of how things are made.
You’ll be capable of one or more of the following:
- bringing a natural inventiveness and a strong creative voice to idea generation
- taking an idea and translating it’s essence into a well-articulated design that can be made
- shaping and guiding the output of our exceptionally talented design team
You’ll work closely with the creative director, head of design, and design function, and may also take a visible role with clients, collaborators and suppliers. We’re looking for someone who thrives in an entrepreneurial environment and is confident leading projects and team. A whatever it takes attitude and a balanced commitment to both creative and professional excellence are key in this role.
Essential experience/skills:
- seven plus years’ in a relevant creative industry
- excellent hand sketching ability
- advanced skills with Rhino, KeyShot & Adobe Suite
- excellent organisation, time management and communication skills
- ability to thrive in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment – a whatever it takes attitude
- creative flair, the ability to generate concepts that delight and inspire
- proven ability taking an idea and translating the core of it through iteration to a fully formed design package for manufacture
- demonstrated team leadership, guiding and shaping the output of an exceptionally talented group to deliver results beyond individual capabilities
Desired experience/skills:
- ten plus years’ in a relevant creative industry
- advanced skills with ZBrush, Blender, AutoCad
- strong client facing skills
- good industry contacts in supply and manufacture
- other relevant creative skills: painting, sculpting, graphics, artworking
