Led by founders, brothers Ian and Richard Abell and Alex Welch since 2004, from its studio, workshop and production facility in Greenwich, London, Based Upon is well known for its collaborative creative culture, making work as a team.

The studio works at elemental scale and in intricate detail. While much of the studio’s iconic work is in metal or resins, it invites new members with interests in varied materials and processes.
Designer job description
Working in the design function at Based Upon you will play an active role in both self-initiated and commissioned works, contributing from early conceptual development through to fabrication and delivery. You’ll be working across multiple projects simultaneously, generating 3D models, technical drawings and visualisations with precision and imagination.
This is a material led role within a highly collaborative studio, suited to someone with a good eye and a solid technical foundation. Absolutely key is a willingness to get stuck in – whether that’s perfecting early renders, prototyping design intents, or preparing final files for fabrication. You’ll be working closely with the Head of Design, fabrication team and wider studio to help deliver pioneering designs and extraordinary craftsmanship.
We’re looking for someone who is curious, self-motivated and thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment — someone who takes initiative, seeks excellence, and wants to grow.
Essential experience/skills:
- three plus years’ in a relevant creative industry
- good hand sketching ability
- advanced skills with Rhino, KeyShot and Adobe Suite
- excellent organisation, time management and communication skills
- ability to thrive in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment – a whatever it takes attitude
- fluent in interpreting and making complex technical drawings
- a meticulous eye for detail, a clear understanding of wide ranging fabrication techniques, and an ability to design specifically for manufacture
Desired experience/skills:
- five plus years’ in a relevant creative industry
- advanced skills with ZBrush, Blender, AutoCAD
- programming and/or running CNC, laser and 3D printers
- other relevant creative skills: painting, sculpting, graphics, artworking
