The studio works at an elemental scale and in intricate detail. While much of the studio’s iconic work is in metal or resins, it invites new members with interests in varied materials and processes.
Outline
Based Upon is currently seeking an enthusiastic and versatile team member with a design/engineering background and an interest in automation. The successful candidate will assist in the programming, setup, and operation of our CNC Router, supporting our head machinist. Our machine is pivotal to our fabrication capacity, handling multiple materials at various stages of our production. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong interest in the machining process, a keen willingness to learn and listen, and an eagerness to follow instructions. This role presents an excellent opportunity to work on unique projects and receive training in both manual and CNC machinery and does not require expertise in machining if attitude and understanding of the concept are correct.
The candidate will require a portfolio of work that demonstrates creative thinking, problem-solving and an eye for detail.
Essential interests, experience and skills:
- demonstrated use of CNC equipment, including laser, 3D printer, router, etc. – this can be with assistance during education, or independently
- proficiency in CAD software, preferably Rhino
- understanding of related processes in our workflow, such as fabrication, pattern and mould making, painting, and fine finishing
- expertise in wood fabrication
- proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)

Desirable experience:
- familiarity with G-code
- fluency in CAM software
- knowledge of Grasshopper script and Python script
- previous work with robots, specifically UR (Universal Robots)
- experience in machining both raw and finished materials
- ability to specify and order stock
- proficiency in machine and stock setup
- expertise in metal fabrication
Other requirements
Standard working hours are 8.45am-5.30pm, Monday to Friday, with a 45-minute unpaid lunch break, and two 15-minute breaks. 15-minute breaks will be one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
However, you will be expected to work longer hours when required and occasional weekends.
